Cancelling MRI the night before

I'm supposed to have an MRI tomorrow at 7:45am. Phone lines don't open until 8. We have had a family emergency. I've called the phone line to cancel but obviously they are not open. I left a message. Is this enough? Their phone lines open at 8 so not sure what else I can do.

Appreciate this is a bit of a daft question as I know there's nothing else I can do but my head is all over the place!

If you really can't make it due to a dire emergency then that is all you can do.

somanychristmaslights · 19/01/2026 21:04

Can you not do the MRI as it’s so early in the morning? You clearly need it.

ImmortalJillyCooper · 19/01/2026 21:05

People don’t attend scans all the time. And sometimes the machines break. Obviously not ideal, but don’t beat yourself up about something beyond your control. It’s too late for them to fill up the slot and you’ve done all you can by leaving a message. Hope the emergency situation can be resolved OP

There is nothing else you can do. Hope everything OK.

Hopefully you get a sympathetic person and they don't take you off the wait list, but I would suggest calling again later tomorrow if you can and apologising.

I can't. My close friend has been in an accident and it's bad so I am staying with her children overnight so they're with someone they know. I'm not going to the MRI just not in a good head space. Thanks all.

Can you find an email address, anything on appt letter ? (If you got one) you can generally find an email address online

My old mum tried to cancel an appointment for a chest x-ray but couldn't get through or leave a message. It was for the 5th, so the first day back at work for most people and we had a bunch of snow dumped on us with loads of school closures - what can you do?

They'll be those who will blame the entire collapse of the NHS sorely on her, but there's nothing she could do in this circumstance and not being able to leave a message is just madness.

Can you call the main hospital switchboard? And ask them how to get a message through

fruitbrewhaha · 19/01/2026 21:16

Sorry about your friend. Could no one else take over from you in the morning?

CuppaTandBicky · 19/01/2026 23:10

I would ring main switchboard of hospital (find on Google) and ask to be put through to MRI. (As someone in there will be in from earlier than 8) Failing that, don't worry just ring later in the day, apologise, and explain you still need it.

Talkingfrog · 20/01/2026 01:26

We missed an appointment last week ( follow up at minor injuries). We couldn't help it - the letter arrived the day after the appointment. I called to explain - the lady was lovely, and rebooked us. When there they decided an mri was needed, so gave me the form so we could go around and book an appointment. They slotted us in between those already booked in. There is a possibility that the same thing happens with the slot you can no longer make.

Sounds as if you have done what you can. I would call them in the morning to explain and see if they can offer you a replacement appointment.
Hope your friend ( and her children) are OK.
