i know there’s a lot of opinions on “influencers” on here so I just want to clarify that I’m not posting anything like that, just my opinions on sports etc.

I see a lot of women my age being offered incredible opportunities after building a community doing this sort of thing - free tickets, free trips, etc etc. so I figured why not, I’ve got a lot of spare time and can put some effort into it.

My family are all pretty embarrassed by me. They seem to think it reflects badly on them and that if anyone finds out I’ll regret it. They’re all begging me to take the videos down and close down my page.

AIBU to do it?

Could you block the family members who are complaining so they can't see your posts?

trivialpursuitnotagoodgame · 18/01/2026 14:19

ahh I’d support you! Are you insta and or TikTok?

Coka · 18/01/2026 14:19

Like anything people will judge you trying something new. If it happens to do well they will then be your biggest supporters as if they didnt try to bring you down at the start. If you enjoying it then go for it and ignore their opinions. You will learn along the way.

Ring lights and external mics are not fancy. They absolutely are being used by "real" accounts.

Nobody wants to watch regular videos from someone who sounds like they're underwater/in a gale force wind or appears to be sitting in the dark.

Hmm sounds like that falls under the category of clear sound and decent lighting.

amimakingafannyofmyself · 18/01/2026 14:21

I have clear sound and lighting - mostly using my AirPods as a little mic but I think I have a mini mic somewhere.

im trying to view it in a way that im not sitting here thinking I’ll definitely make a career out of it, but I have a really exciting year coming up personally, and if all I end up with at the end of the year is a really cool video diary of everything I’ve done then that’s cool too!

It seems like harmless fun and something you enjoy doing which is great .

I think a lot of people of my generation have outgrown social media now . It’s seems everyone has an opinion on something and they feel the need to share it with the world. It’s a bold move to put yourself out there like that and you’re going to attract all types of attention and feedback. So be prepared for people saying that you are embarrassing and learn to live with that if you want to continue . I couldn’t and wouldn’t want that for me .

Thanksforyourlackofthought · 18/01/2026 14:23

pm me your insta handle and I'll follow you!

I know quite a bit about them, watch them regularly, attend matches etc.

Fair enough. As long as you're happy that whatever you're putting out may be found or resurrected years down the line by an employer or contact and you're not posting anything that could come back to bite you. E.g. if you decide to become a local councillor and someone has it in for you, would they find anything in your videos that would cause a scandal/put an end to your aspirations. If not, then up to you to try it out if you're comfortable.

The only other thing I'd say is to think about the abuse you might experience if your profile increases and how you would manage that. Unfortunately it's a fact of being female and online.

RedTagAlan · 18/01/2026 14:29

Cool. I reckon that's ok for a hobby thing.

From the social media I have followed, I think the freebies start at about 30k subs. But that's specialist hobbies. And once the freebies start to appear many folk unsub because of bias. Sport will be more competitive I would have thought.

If you enjoy it, and learn new skills such as production and editing, I reckon it's a fantastic thing to do. And if it's a niche sport, all the better.

You're the one who disparaged me for making that very point in the first place. Stop being so unpleasant and manipulative.

Yeah that’s all I want to do really.

I’m under no illusion that I’m this seriously interesting person who’s going to become a celebrity overnight, or at all. I just want to learn some skills, maybe find people to connect with and try and back myself with some self confidence that I’ve never really had before.

Oh I’ve no intentions to get into politics or anything like that 😂

Go for it @amimakingafannyofmyself , you might get some freebies, you might not. I post book reviews online. I can't remember the last time I paid for a book as I get sent so many for free!

333FionaG · 18/01/2026 14:42

Are you posting on here to try and bump up your followers? 😉
I wouldn't have the time nor the patience to try and create content on a daily basis like influencers do and I wish you luck.
How do you get yourself noticed? Is it through hashtags?

I can't stand the whole "content creator" bullshit. I've yet to get why people are that conceited that they think everyone should be interested in recordings of themselves (typically made in their cars) talking absolute shite.

I'd be mortified if my husband started doing it.

I think on TikTok it’s a combination of being an “active” account (watching videos, commenting on others etc), hashtags and them analysing your content. I must be hitting something because one of my videos has just shown up on my own FYP, so I’m hitting the algorithm of people like me 😂

For me it’s a “why not” situation. What have I got to lose by doing it?

The great thing about being an adult is that you have the choice not to watch any of this. Loads of people post about things that don’t interest me - I just don’t watch/read/listen.

One thing I’m trying to focus on is budget travel, especially for sports trips which are typically very expensive

I create content on behalf of other people for work- the only way to succeed in social media is pick up your camera, push through the cringe, and start posting. All successful influencers and content creators will tell you this.

Lots of friends and family members do things I wouldn't do, doesn't mean they should stop doing it. So long as you're not hurting anyone then crack on!

This is something I’ve seen as well. That one video will just suddenly spark it for you and until then you need to push through
