For those who used to drink and found it played a big role in catching up with friends, what do you do instead now? Coffee? Walks?

I’m giving Dry January a go for the first time this year and I’m curious whether it’s something I could continue longer term.

Yours sincerely,
a tired, yet curious 43 year old.

Yes coffee, walks, cake, afternoon tea, cinema, theatre.

I'd still meet up for drinks if that's what everyone else likes doing.
For alternative non alcoholic drinks --
Sparkling water, ice and slice of lemon/lime?
Lemon tea? Lemonade and lime? Iced tea (made up, i.e. from a plastic bottle? It comes in lemon or peach flavours.)
Flavoured or herbal teas in sachets. I'm quite partial to some of these, like chamomile. I think these days quite a few pubs, and certainly lots of cafés, could well have a selection.
Iced coffee.

Drink non-alcoholic beers, spirits or cocktails. It’s getting more prevalent. I haven’t drunk in 3 years and my tolerance of drunk people is very low, so pubs are less appealing, but it is possible if you’re giving up without an addiction (as I did)

Yep, go for drinks and have non-alcoholic ones! As well as creative suggestions above, there's always the usual range of soft drinks. Most places now have zero beer and wine, too.

This week I have:
gone for a walk with a friend
met up for a cup of tea at a friend's house
gone to a gong soundbath because my friend wanted to try it
been for a walk in the woods and had coffee around a camp fire

Last weekend had a few people over for Sunday lunch and just drank soft drinks. I genuinely didn't even notice that we weren't drinking. That was a first.

Week before:
Went to theatre with a friend
Went to a talk with a friend
Had coffee with some friends

After a while, people just know you'd rather meet for coffee and walks.
