Jet skis are an absolute nuisance

I am very lucky to be on a family holiday at a beach resort in Thailand. After an extremely difficult year we have splashed out on an amazing villa with a direct view of the ocean and a private terrace and pool. I know we are lucky to be here.

But oh my gosh - the jet skis!! The noise is constant as there are about 3 to 7 jet skis continuously doing loops at any one time for hours on end. The noise from their stupid engines is horrendous. Like a gang of Hells Angels zipping past all day long. I feel like I am sitting on the M1 motorway. Can’t hear the ocean or the waves lapping. Can’t enjoy an uninterrupted view of the ocean. Can’t have a doze or restful lounge on the sunbed without the engine noise. Can’t read my book in peace. My ears hurt. I can also see that a lot of the people driving them have no real clue what they are doing. They are dangerous out there. They need to be banned or have restricted hours! Rant over.

I’m with you. They should be used, if at all, further out to sea where they can’t be heard from the beach.

Please do mention it to the hotel/villa owners (they probably can’t do anything but they might be able to in the long run, you never know), and write a review of where you are staying mentioning the jetskis, so future bookers know the issue.

tripleginandtonic · 17/01/2026 10:35

Yabu, jet skis are fun for a lot of folk.

Peridot1 · 17/01/2026 10:39

YANBU. They are a menace.

Definitely mention it in a review. Thailand depends on its tourist industry and when that famous beach from the movie The Beach got too overrun and damaged they acted and have banned people from it I think. Can’t remember the exact details.

XelaM · 17/01/2026 10:40

Having been allowed to rent one as a complete beginner (and take my daughter), they are so so dangerous and it's a miracle I didn't kill anyone as I absolutely couldn't see anything when I was on it from the splashes.

AnSolas · 17/01/2026 10:40

You were given a holiday home beside a beach which hosts a car/motor bike/speed boat/ jet ski race track without being told it was there.

noctilucentcloud · 17/01/2026 11:00

I think jet skis (and dirt bikes) are quite a selfish past time - one person (or a handful of people) is enjoying it, but lots more people have to listen to the noise whether they want to or not.

ChicJoker · 17/01/2026 11:02

Your ears hurt? Really?

Poshjock · 17/01/2026 11:04

jet skis are to water what electric scooters are to pavements.

Absolutely this. I hate them.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 17/01/2026 11:10

The noise is also harmful to wildlife. They are dangerous.

takealettermsjones · 17/01/2026 11:10

Poor you 🤣

TheatreTheatre · 17/01/2026 11:14

Horrible things. For many reasons.

Good reminder to check for their use when booking a holiday.

Sorry they are disturbing your enjoyment of the beach and sea.

Chamomileteaplease · 17/01/2026 11:15

It's hard to feel sorry for someone on a Thailand beach in January but god yes I really do feel sorry for you. Jet ski noise is so awful for so many people.

Definitely state it very clearly in the review! In the meantime I would contact the owners/managers and ask whether by some miracle there are some days when jet skis are not allowed. Tell them how awful it is.

Depending on how long y%ou have left I would look into moving. It sounds more like torture than a holiday and if you've saved up for ages for it and can't just try again next year it's even worse.

Do they carry on into the evening as well?

AgnesMcDoo · 17/01/2026 11:18

I hate them.

they are so dangerous and the noise is awful.

designated areas and much better regulation and safety standards needed

Evieatthebeach · 17/01/2026 14:34

We did mention it to the hotel but the jet skis can be hired from several points on the island and there’s not much they can do about it. We have seen a few near misses and a couple of them being towed back in to the beach so they are more difficult to manage than some tourists are aware.

I naively imagined a peaceful, relaxing sea view every day.

We live by a coastal bay ( Australia) and jet skis are banned there both because of the noise pollution and also the environmental impacts. Occasionally, someone will attempt to launch a jet ski but the local life saving club gets on to it pretty quickly.

Others are enjoying the sea , you want to enjoy it too but in a different way. Noone is right or wrong

The moral question isn't just determined by relative enjoyment, but the impact of one's personal enjoyment on others.

In this case, the way in which one person is enjoying the ocean has a negative impact on another which isn't reciprocal.

BobblyBobbleHat · 17/01/2026 14:45

I completely agree with you, horrible things and they can be so devastating to wildlife.

So they could be banned or limited to fixed areas but the locals decided that the revenue from the jet skis is not putting the revenue from other tourist spending at risk.

If all the hotel review were about all the near miss carcrashs that almost kill the holidaymaker who were minding their own business most people would not want to risk staying there. 🤷‍♀️

Do any of the local building supply shops sell ear protectors 😉

How do you check for their use?

Fends · 17/01/2026 15:22

Hate jet skis. Absolutely hate them

Number of local places which rent them and distance from hotel and usage restrictions on beaches or number of reviews which love/hate that they can be rented.
