Will I get in trouble / a fine for this?

There’s some roadworks near my house. They’re resurfacing the road, and there are traffic lights set up for single file. I was waiting for the light to change to green when a council or highways van (I think) pulled in front of me. He was leading us through as they had machinery out. We were driving along when suddenly he slowed down and moved a bit to the side. I thought he was signaling me to go ahead, so I switched to the next lane and accidentally drove over fresh tarmac. I can’t be the only one who got confused because three other cars behind me did the same thing. The van driver came up next to me and said, “well that’s not very good,” and I said, “well why did you slow down and pull over”. He just looked at me and told me to pull back in behind him. I thought about speaking to him afterwards, but there were 20 men standing around and I felt awkward, so I just carried on.

I didn’t see any cameras around, and there were no stop signs or arrows on the back of the van. Am I going to get a fine for possibly damaging the tarmac? Yes, maybe I should have paid more attention, but I’ve been driving for 13 years and have gone through all sorts of roadworks without any issues before! I don’t think his driving helped at all and just confused things!

I'd be very surprised if there was any legal reason to issue you with a penalty notice.. surely they'll just patch it up and think no more of it.

Nope, you won’t.
