Im experiencing a medical issue. I am not sure whether I've gad a severe alergic reaction or ive got shingles. My eyesight is swollen and ive got head pain and a forehead rash. I saw my GP today who said it's not shingles but a severe alergic reaction. She said the rash is not a typical shingles rash. She fave me antihistamine tablets and told me to come back in the morning for a further assessment from another GOto see if it develops into shingles. If my Go was confident that it was an alergic reaction then why would she ask me to go back for someone else to look at

I've had shingles on my face twice.
The single most identifiable symptoms I had were a sharp, twanging pain like I was being flicked by an elastic band. It would happen without warning and be very painful and even wake me up if I was asleep.
Both times I was really miserable before I had any visible symptoms. I mean really depressed which is utterly out of character.

The moment my GP thought I had shingles I had antiviral drugs which switched it off immediately. I think if your GP had any inkling it was shingles they would have prescribed the medication.

Doctors are just human beings. They don't know everything. Their diagnosing is just guesswork, their own beliefs, and some medical knowledge. They don't know every disease, illness, abnormality. They don't know how things individually effect anyone. There are trillions of things anything could be.

They don't know what will happen. They guess and advise. Sometimes they get it right, sometimes they don't.

With rashes, how they develop can be a useful part of diagnosis.

So reassessing you, seeing if it has moved/worsened/ if your symptoms have changed is very wise.

A diagnosis is a best guess with the information available - going back will allow a better diagnosis.

FaceEatingLeopard · 13/01/2026 17:19

So you've been to the GP how many times? And the pharmacist? And an optician? And now A & E. Is that right?

I guess that's you all out of options then if you don't now get the wrong answer you so desperately want.

It doesn’t sound like the doctor’s not sure, it sounds like they’re sure it’s not shingles and that’s why they’ve nt prescribed.

OP where is the rash? Is it around your eye? Any eye redness/watering/pain? Does the rash cross the centre of your face or is it confined to one side?

I the rash is only in my forehead above my eye and in hairlune

I posted a pic of rash but it's under review. Basically the doctor at a and e looked at me and said it's not shingles. He said carry on with the medication and he thinks it's an alergic reaction. That's what two pharmacists said and so did the Gp this morning. That's four people who have said it's not shingles. I therefore have to conclude that o do not have shingles. I cannot continue to seek out answers from various medics. All I can do is treat myself with the medication that ive been given and see what happens. The hospital doctor said if symptoms get worse see a doctor.

You can now see the picture I posted and see my rash. Still quite concerned

We are human beings and we don't know everything but your comments on how we go about making a diagnosis are quite shockingly incorrect.

you are being so unbelievably unreasonable

4 people to convince you ( and I am not convinced you are convinced) that you do not have shingles.

dear god woman.

Yes 4 people because one person keeps saying to me you have shingles and this person is not medically trained. When the GP said it was a severe allergic reaction, this person said your GP is wrong so she convinced me. When I saw the second GP, this person said she was wrong. She said she had spoken to work colleagues who had my symptoms and were told they had shingles so the doctors were wrong in saying I dont. Then when I sent a photo of my face showing my symptoms she showed it to a doctor where she works and the doctor told her it was shingles so she said if the doctor i showed your face to says it's shingles then it is

I only saw 4 people to convince her that I dont have shingles and maybe she will stop telling me I do

I don’t know why you don’t just ignore her. You have seen multiple professionals who all agree it is not.

tinybeautiful · 14/01/2026 00:26

OP do you have a learning difficulty or disability? You sound very vulnerable in this moment. Is there someone who supports you that you could share your worries with? I am confident that you do not have shingles.

JuliesName · 14/01/2026 01:14

So glad you've wasted 4 doctors time with this nonsense.

Grow up.

I understand it's better to treat for shingles even if not sure but ive been to 2 Gps and a pharmacy who closely looked at my symptoms and none of the. Suggested treating for shi gles. You cannot force them to give you medication for shingles because they will say we have examined you and it's a alergic reaction take antihistamines. You would look silly if you argued with them and insisted. They would think I was bonkers. That's why Im at a and e abd if the doctor says just fake antihistamines tge. J can't argue and will havd to accept it

Is it entirely on one side? If it crosses the midline it's very unlikely to be shingles. Do you have a pic?

Barnbrack · 14/01/2026 04:53

So even if it is shingles they don't always give treatment for it. It is typically self limiting. Sometimes rashes develop and the cause is more.obvoous. if you ask for eye casualty referral they can do viral swabs and you'll have an answer in a couple of days.

What are you worried will happen without anti vitals?
