A long rant about Sainsburys. Should I keep the £16?

A big rant about my shopping trip today. I'm a faithful Ocado shopper. I am neither posh nor rich. I shop there as I am vegan with high cholesterol and that's the only place (other than a far away Waitrose) that I can buy plant based Benecol. Also their customer service is outstanding. I bought my border terriers santa suits a few years back and they didn't fit. I rang customer services who said "oh we can see you are a regular customer, we'll refund you straight away. Just hand the suits back to the driver at your next delivery". That's good, right?

Today I went to an area I used to live and shopped in Sainsbury's. Went to a self service till, had to call assistant to take £2 off for car parking. Then as I was scanning items the machine froze a few times so she had to come back to unlock it. Shopping came to approx £38. I had an online blue light card voucher for £20 something so used that then used credit card to pay the remainder, approx £16. Payment seemed to go through, then the machine froze again. Assistant came over, tried to unfreeze it then went to another customer to help them. Then came back to me, tried again. Then went to another customer. This happened quite a few times and it was clear it wasn't sorting the issue and there were lots of customers requiring her attention so she kept leaving me to help them. I asked if she could call someone else to help.

Another, more senior, colleague came over to me. First thing she said was that she should be on her break (not my problem) then said "oh we will have to take your shopping to another till and scan it there" I explained I had already scanned and paid for it and was just awaiting a receipt. She said "Well, we have no proof you have paid, do we?" She did a reboot of the till. This took AGES and came up with a screen that showed I spent £40 and paid £20 with gift card but it looked as thought I still had £16 to pay. I went to my credit card online statement and it showed I had paid the £16 but she said "Well, that might be pending and come off as soon as you get home" She wanted me to pay the £16 again and if it showed I had paid twice to come back to the store a few days later to get a refund. I explained that I did not live in the area so would not do that and that my car park time was almost up so I needed to go. She mentioned her break was due again and called a manager.

After a while he turned up and asked me if I had tried scanning the items. I did get a bit snappy and say "I've scanned and paid for it all and just want to go because I am going to get a parking ticket" He had the right idea, and said if I was happy to leave without a receipt then they couldn't keep me there as my credit card online showed I had paid. So I took my shopping and left.

That took over an hour, just to pay for it. He did say sorry but the woman below him was very rude and talked to me like I was scamming them - no apology from her just a lot of huffing about her break.

I feel IABU as I should have just put the shopping in my bag and walked out. But without a receipt I could have got stopped by the Security Guard. I was a timid mouse!

Thanks for listening to my rant. I do hope the £16 has been charged to my credit card as I hate moral dilemmas, even little £16 ones but if it hasn't been charged then am I right to think they owe me £16 as they took an hour of my time, were rude to me and keep it as compensation?

On the plus side I bought some orange and cinnamon baby beetroot which I have never seen before. Hope they're good.

To be fair, after all that hassle I hope they haven’t charged your card and you get to keep the £16. I used to always go to self scan tills but lately, as in the last few months there is always only one member of staff supervising all 15/20 self scan tills . The waits have been horrendous lately and i avoid buying alcohol or anything ‘lightweight’ like a birthday card as they trigger the tills! So fed up of shopping in supermarkets that i may try online myself for a change!

What has all that guff about being a faithful Ocado shopper got to do with your experience at Sainsbury's? Confused

GlassofRosePorfavor · 08/01/2026 15:45

I sometimes go off piste to Sainsbury's et al but always return to Ocado because of something small but annoying. Serves us right op 😂

I presume to illustrate the difference between good and bad customer service experiences.

JoshLymanSwagger · 08/01/2026 15:50

Yanbu.

In your shoes, if I hadn't already paid for half the shopping I would have walked out and left them to it.

CBM40 · 08/01/2026 15:55

If the transaction was still sitting on the screen after the reboot then you won't have been charged. It will sit in pending for possibly a few days but won't complete. Wouldn't worry about it though. They will have voided the transaction

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/01/2026 16:11

Don't use self service. Its always a pain in the arse.

My local big Sainsbury’s is the same re the undermanned self service tills. One assistant between two different areas ( trolley shop and standard) with a part railing between the two involving a sideways shimmy through. . The assistant can’t possibly keep up with the people requiring help. It’s quicker to join the queue of trollies at the 2, sometimes only 1, manned tills. The reasons I continue going there is they have good parking, which I want for getting heavy stuff, an Argos and a big Tu section, otherwise I stick to Waitrose.

ChopstickNovice · 08/01/2026 16:21

I mostly hate SS tills. They have less and less staff manning them and as a PP said often the till won't recognize a light item such as a greeting card. Grrr.

always one !!!!!!!!!!

LLJETO · 08/01/2026 16:26

I shop mainly in Sainsbury’s and M&S and have never had such issues - always had great customer service too. Did have a similar issue in Tesco once though but that was ages ago. I think it’s just one of those things that happens from time to time, as shit as it is. I always use self service as well!

sparebooks · 08/01/2026 16:33

Our big Sainsbury’s is now 90% self service tills and it’s a nightmare. The larger/trolley focussed self service ones freeze every 3/4 items if you try and pack as you go, and while I will say that there are plenty of staff around- a lot of the time they are chatting in groups and come over grudgingly whilst still nattering to their colleagues.

I hate it and now only go when I know it will be quiet, so we can queue for the manned tills without having to wait ages.

SleeplessInsomniac · 08/01/2026 16:45

This happened to me in Tesco a while back, except I was made to pay again or I wasn't leaving with the items. As it turned out I ended up paying twice. Had to get an official statement from my bank as they wouldn't accept me showing the online transaction, and took a further 2 trips to the shop to get my refund. One of the staff even tried to argue that I could have spent the same amount twice and it wasn't proof I had paid twice. I was only shopping there as I had a hospital appointment and there was a much larger Tesco there. I also ended up probably 20 quid out of pocket on fuel, not to mention the hoops I had to jump through. So I say, if they don't end up taking the money from you, take it as a win. It's small fry to them anyway. (I ended up boycotting Tesco for about 6 months after that coz I was so pissed off).

CactusSwoonedEnding · 08/01/2026 16:49

After all that, any decent supermarket would be giving you a £16 gift voucher by way of apology. You're fine - leave it up the the Will of the Gods - if the £16 went through then you have simply paid for the goods you have. If it didn't then that shows you deserved the credit.

roastedrapidly · 08/01/2026 16:51

I new you were my kind of person the moment I read you bought your border terriers Santa suits!

ILoveYouJefferyS · 08/01/2026 16:54

Every Supermarket self scan asks if you want a recipt.. just press no.. take your shopping.. off you pop.. problem solved.. for every sainsburys problem .. you can bet there is one at Ocado.🤣

Anonanonanonagain · 08/01/2026 16:55

Never mind the money, what is the beetroot like?

Rhaidimiddim · 08/01/2026 17:09

Their poor service cost you an hour of your time. Regard the £16 as compensation.

lol yes let’s end on a positive, you’ve brought is news that this delicacy exists 😅

CrowsInMyGarden · 08/01/2026 18:47

@Ablondiebutagoody There were no tills open with an actual person. I don't mind a self service till usually but i feel it is not fair on those people who don't feel confident using self service.

Yabu for using Sainsbury's. Worst of the supermarkets and treat their customers like theives. Ive had nothing but bad experiences. Plus their products and prices suck.
But I voted yanbu as it sounds like a particularly horrible experience and i hope you didn't get charged.
