Russia condemn The US, silver lining?

Maybe with Russia condemning the "US attack (on Venezuela) an eregious act of aggression" it will lead to Trump falling out with Putin and so more help for Ukraine (silver lining).

Russia invade Ukraine (its ok for them to do it) but the US take out a leader and arrest and charge him (not ok to Russia). Double standards.

Maybe Ukraine might get more support after all

Interesting, because I thought that Putin would congratulate Trump and say "This is just what we are trying to do in Ukraine".

ScholesPanda · 05/01/2026 16:31

It's a nice idea, but I doubt it will happen that way somehow.

If anything, by dividing the world into spheres of influence with the resurrected Monroe Doctrine, I think Trump is signalling he cares less about Europe than any US President since Herbert Hoover.

And I don't think Putin is likely to think 'oh maybe what I'm doing is bad too.'

Good point.

I don't think Trump thinks much of Europe, jealousy or hatred maybe. He always appears scornful towards European countries.

I think what Putin says in public is very different to what he whispers in Trumps ear.

It does sound like a pact. Leave each other's countries alone to grab what they want.

Oil, money, land ... people are just not important to these leaders

I think Trump really admires Putin and seems like he desperately wants Putin to like him so just won't address it at all. I get the feeling it's far more likely he will twist it against Zelenskyy, about corrupt leaders getting their comeuppance.

Yes for some strange reason he appears to.like Putin.

The way Trump and his surrounding men treated Zelensky was appalling. Uncouth bullies.

What always surprises me about Trump is that - and this is absolutely a generalisation I know - is that he is old enough to have been an adult in America when the Soviet Union was hated and most other Americans of his age have kept that suspicion of Russia. I'm not into conspiracy theories, honest! But do wonder if there is some truth in the rumours that some he knew in, or had links with, the USSR paid off debts for him in the 80s.

EasternStandard · 05/01/2026 21:03

Idk about this but Maduro going weakens Putin

I think there’s a UN Security Council vote soon, not sure what’s happening with that
