WhatsApp group - am I being precious?

Please tell me if I’m just being a dickhead. New-ish next door neighbours, really nice, other neighbours who have been here a few years, also really nice. Neighbour wife 1, let’s call her Samantha, neighbour wife 2, Chloe. Today, Samantha created a WhatsApp group called “Samantha and Chloe”, adding both Chloe and myself. Very kindly inviting us over for drinks this weekend. Am I BU to be a bit baffled about the name of the group? Should I just quietly exit it, after we’ve been round for drinks, because I clearly wasn’t meant to be in the group? (Tho why would you have a WhatsApp group with only 2 people in?)

I would just message back and ask if you were meant to be included given the name of the group, and no problem if not!

Goditsmemargaret · 02/01/2026 23:04

I'd go for drinks and make a joke of it.

KarenbyNameButNotbyNature · 02/01/2026 23:06

She's kindly named it so that the new person knows the names of her new neighbours (while cleverly sidestepping if she's forgotten yours).

Thanks! Yeah the daft thing is I accepted the drinks invitation , it was only when I looked again at the name and thought “hang on!?”

I think you were meant to be a group. Maybe she added your name, but with the three it was too long and she made an error?

BillieWiper · 02/01/2026 23:09

She discussed it with Chloe beforehand so named it that as they were the 'founding members' and didn't want to call it after names of people who might not want to join? Or just have a big list of names? And wasn't being especially imaginative with naming it? I wouldn't think anything of it and assume I was included. And they or you might add others?

Maybe my WhatsApp etiquette is off?

WomenCantBeBulliedOutOfResistance · 02/01/2026 23:11

If you don't name a WhatsApp group I believe it will automatically show the names of the others in the group

Amapola0215 · 02/01/2026 23:11

Please don't stress - when you set up a what's app group and leave the name blank it just adds the two names who aren't yours!!
So her group will say Rockchick and Samantha. Samantha's will say Rockchick and Chloe.

I know this as I set up a group with 3 people and didn't name it and one of my friends said "hey why aren't I in the group name?!" Then we realised!

Beat me to it! But yes this is how whatsapp groups work if you don’t name the group yourself

Ohnobackagain · 02/01/2026 23:22

What @Amapola0215 said @Rockchick76 !

Ireolu · 02/01/2026 23:26

You are meant to be in the group. She could just have messaged the other person directly if you weren't invited. It's active effort to create a gp.

Upsetbetty · 02/01/2026 23:37

YABU if you don't name a new group chat on WhatsApp then it automatically names the group based on the names of the participants you have saved in your contacts. This name will appear differently for each participant. She made it with all three of you!

TheSunRisesInTheEast · 02/01/2026 23:43

She could have just named it "Neighbours", because no doubt others will join in due course

TartanMammy · 03/01/2026 00:05

WhatsApp automatically name the group of you don't rename it yourself 🤣. So for your friends it will appear as 'rockchick and Samantha' and 'rockchick and chloe' on their phones. You don't need your own name in the title because obviously you're in the group if it's in your inbox!

This! You are definitely invited.

I set a group up called emma and Jo - the group is for us to contact each other about a hobby we have - but it’s not called laura emma and Jo - think it’s standard

GrowingUpIsATrap · 03/01/2026 00:21

This happened in a group of 4 of us... my friend was confused about why her name wasn't in the group title, when the group name had defaulted to the other people's names. So we renamed it "Why isn't Katie in the group name?" which it will stay forever 🤣

Sleepthief · 03/01/2026 08:57

This is weirdly fascinating! So, if you set up a group with 9 other people but didn’t name it, would it have all 9 names as the group name, or does it cap it at 2? (Not sure why I need to know this, but I do!)

I did not know this - thank you!

BennyHenny · 03/01/2026 09:28

This is so funny and exactly the type of overthinking I would do, not realising there was an innocent explanation 😂

TimeTime · 03/01/2026 09:59

I have a few groups like this and, having been the one who set each of them up, it’s really easy for me as I just think whether I want to message A&B, A,B&C or C,D&E but it’s really confusing for the others in the group as their name is in the chat but not mine. I only realised this when C set up another chat group with A, B & Me and I couldn’t understand why.
