Not sure if it's the time of year but my social feeds have suddenly been flooded with content from 'influencers' who've moved to Dubai/ Australia/ Spain and are smugly reflecting on how much better their life is.
Most of these posts have a crappy rainy day in the UK and then transition to a sunny day at the beach in their new location.
I don't actively follow these accounts, they just come up when I'm scrolling but they all seem to be the same. A dig at this country and suggesting moving abroad will solve all problems. It's seems to have become fashionable to bash the UK and suggest a move away is the best option. I even saw a BBC article the other day called 'who isn't in Australia?'
I know life in the UK isn't perfect and has well documented problems but these clichéd posts are getting quite boring and make out that moving abroad is some never ending paradise. I know from my own friends and family it's not all it's cracked up to be.
My best friend came back from Australia last year after 3 years and tells quite a different story. They were lured by the promise of sun and beaches etc but actually struggled with cost of living a lot (just like we do here) and felt very isolated being so far from close friends and family. They really tried to make it work and have it live up to their expectations but ultimately they're back here and feel relieved.
My cousin has lived in Spain for 15 years and when I saw him over Christmas he did nothing but complain. He earns 1,500 euros a month as an English teacher and hasn't many career prospects over there beyond what he's doing now. He's started looking into teaching languages at private schools in the UK and is considering moving back.
Just two examples and I'm sure there's loads of people super happy abroad but lots of people are happy in the UK too.
