Sick of UK bashing

Prendo · 02/01/2026 19:57

Not sure if it's the time of year but my social feeds have suddenly been flooded with content from 'influencers' who've moved to Dubai/ Australia/ Spain and are smugly reflecting on how much better their life is.

Most of these posts have a crappy rainy day in the UK and then transition to a sunny day at the beach in their new location.

I don't actively follow these accounts, they just come up when I'm scrolling but they all seem to be the same. A dig at this country and suggesting moving abroad will solve all problems. It's seems to have become fashionable to bash the UK and suggest a move away is the best option. I even saw a BBC article the other day called 'who isn't in Australia?'

I know life in the UK isn't perfect and has well documented problems but these clichéd posts are getting quite boring and make out that moving abroad is some never ending paradise. I know from my own friends and family it's not all it's cracked up to be.

My best friend came back from Australia last year after 3 years and tells quite a different story. They were lured by the promise of sun and beaches etc but actually struggled with cost of living a lot (just like we do here) and felt very isolated being so far from close friends and family. They really tried to make it work and have it live up to their expectations but ultimately they're back here and feel relieved.

My cousin has lived in Spain for 15 years and when I saw him over Christmas he did nothing but complain. He earns 1,500 euros a month as an English teacher and hasn't many career prospects over there beyond what he's doing now. He's started looking into teaching languages at private schools in the UK and is considering moving back.

Just two examples and I'm sure there's loads of people super happy abroad but lots of people are happy in the UK too.

It's just content, OP. Don't take it too seriously.

But I agree with you. Generally, people who bash a country only have experience of living in that country. Every country has its pros and cons.

All those creators/influencers who have "moved" to to Dubai will be back soon enough, when they start to realise the constraints and downsides.

Playingvideogames · 02/01/2026 20:02

Each to their own. The UK does feel increasingly like a sinking ship though.

I know it's just content and I usually scroll past but I've seen so many like this that it's clearly a trend

It's an algorithm, OP. You've seen a few posts like that, stopped scrolling to have a look at them, now you're served more posts like that.

Ask yourself - how many people do you know who are doing that IRL?

Well we've dug our own graves with what and who we voted for. I try not to think about it too much, there will be better times in the future

Yes it's probably my own fault for reading these posts as I get even more in feed

I don’t know anyone who has gone out to the Middle East long term. I know lots who now live in Australia and love it. You have the same issues in most places (like having to go to work and balance money/tome/etc). But, I’m pretty content with my life, so have no desire to go somewhere else. I don’t feel aggrieved to others that have wanted it.

Compared to what countries? The USA? France? Italy? Holland? Germany? Sweden? Venezuela? Argentina?

We complain about what we know. We rarely think about what is going on in other countries.

Is your friend not a qualified teacher? Is that why he is looking at teaching in private schools? I don’t know about teacher pay scales in Spain but that does seem low so I’m wondering whether is English as a foreign language rather than a school teacher.

Exactly.

I always think that if people have to constantly go on about how wonderful their new life is, it can't actually be that great. Or they'd be off social media (and UK-based forums) and enjoying it.

He's not fully qualified just a Celta so probably why salary is low.

Or, they're doing it for interaction. Money.

I'm sick of threads about UK bashing. I see more of them than of the actual bashing.

Exactly! A sinking ship compared to what country

Australia, the US, Dubai all have their own problems and compromised if moving

and the UK isn’t the only country in the world with a bit of cold and rain at times

Im sick of these posts too

Lifelover16 · 02/01/2026 20:35

I lived in Middle East in 1980s and have family who are long term residents in Dubai. They have a great lifestyle. If I were young enough I’d be off like a shot.
However I too am sick of UK bashing. I still think it’s a great place to live.

Ok so that’s not really a reflection on Spain then.

5128gap · 02/01/2026 20:51

If people hate the uk, I'd rather them be elsewhere being smug about it than here and whinging about it.

I live abroad. We are actively planning to come back to the Uk for retirement as UK does many many things better than other countries with regards to taxation, healthcare, culture etc and the other shit that people complain about is everywhere. I hate people moaning about muslims and integration and then moving to Dubai and being smug. Fecking hypocrites! Many places in Southern Europe especially are increasing affected by extreme weather due to climate change. I don't see it getting any better.

Mumsnetters always make me laugh when they start Brit bashing but refuse to say which country they're from 😁
