Its really nothing special and pretty meh.

AIBU?

Maybe I'm missing something or have boring relatives?
To me it signals back to work. Another year over.

I love it - means Xmas & all the hard work is over . Fresh start , lots to look forward to ( longer days and bulbs poking their heads out of the soil) holiday planning , a clean & tidy house and out for lunch !

JetFlight · 01/01/2026 08:09

I try use the day to do some relaxing stuff, eat nice food and see if I can plan some things for the year.

SleafordSods · 01/01/2026 08:16

Not back to work for me. Have alrwsdy been in work fkr a few days this week. Now have 4 days off. Utter bliss. DD is coming home later after she finishes work. Am planning a nice meal them some games if the DC aren’t too hungover.

Try it being your birthday too! Really is meh!

Happy birthday! I hope you have a non-meh day Flowers

LancashireButterPie · 01/01/2026 08:20

Got a long drive home from relatives today. The journey down took 6 hours so if I'm home by nightfall I'll be happy.

bleakmidwintering · 01/01/2026 08:21

It used to be when I was growing up, we would have a big family roast dinner. I did try to keep the tradition going but my now adult kids hangovers got in the way 😢

Goatymum · 01/01/2026 08:30

I’m a bit tired after a late night / DS rolled in at some ungodly hour so Lord knows when he’ll emerge. We are supposed to be visiting an elderly relative this afternoon.

vanillalattes · 01/01/2026 08:33

Just a normal day in our house - both off work until Monday still.

Littlegreenbauble · 01/01/2026 08:34

I love new year's day. I shall get outside, then cook a roast later ☺️

It is for us retail workers 😩

I wish it was not, I would like New Year's Day along with Boxing Day to be added to the two other days where large shops are closed.

MermaidMummy06 · 01/01/2026 08:39

For me, on a negative level, it signifies back to work.

On a positive level, it signifies the madness of Christmas is over and I can relax, and businesses we need (like doctors etc) are open again.

NYD means nothing as a public holiday because we're off for two weeks anyway as our company forces us to.take our leave as they shut.

mellongoose · 01/01/2026 08:46

Sorting DH’s tax return. Meh indeed!!!

TidyCyan · 01/01/2026 08:49

I don't love it (it's a bit like the last day of a holiday where all you're doing is going to the airport) but I am going to be productive and do a big clean and a run. Looking forward to taking the tree etc. down over the weekend.

That actually perfectly sums up the feeling that I was struggling to articulate.

I'd like it to feel more than that, I still have my decorations up for a few days but I think I need to come up with some sort of low key tradition for the day.

TheCurious0range · 01/01/2026 09:06

We were planning to visit family today, but the host is unwell and I'm actually pleased for a day at home. Currently slow cooking a pork shoulder for tacos for dinner. We will read, play a board game or two, maybe watch a film. DS just asked to run a bath with some of his Christmas bath stuff. Nice relaxing day after a busy Christmas period.

Good luck with that! I share your pain… I had to pick up my DS ( rural), and we got in gone 4am… I think he will be in his cave most of the day. However, I’m up and my sister is driving us up north to my Mum’s. I’m feeling perky…..not🙄😹!

I agree with a few pp… I wish we had a “ family tradition” but oldest DS just started Uni, so def missed the boat on that front. I hope everyone has a lovely day, whatever they do! 💗

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/01/2026 09:16

My own little NYD tradition is to watch the New Year's day concert live from Vienna. It's always beautiful, with lots of jolly music and has some little sections of views of Vienna/history/art etc.

10.15 BBC 2 if anyone wants to dip in (it's long! 2 and a half hours)

aCatCalledFawkes · 01/01/2026 09:21

I quite like NYD. We take down the Christmas decs and have a nice meal in the evening. I'm not really a NYE person as been at home for years with my kids so like to make something of NYD.

Pineapplewaves · 01/01/2026 10:01

I described it to DC yesterday as Christmas Day all over again but without the presents and the excitement that comes with the presents. I’m cooking another full roast today and we’ll have an afternoon of board games, chocolate and party food. Tomorrow we’ll have a lazy day watching movies and finishing off the remaining food and snacks. Saturday it’s time to start the big clean up in anticipation of back to normal on Monday, Feeling sad it’s the end of the festivities already 🥲

LaurieFairyCake · 01/01/2026 10:31

I love this day, the freshness and excitement of the year ahead 🥰

Disasterclass · 01/01/2026 10:34

We always have a buffet/ party food tea on NY day as we can’t be bothered to cook properly after a late night. Also got a mystery game to do this evening and then will watch Traitors

Ditto

Porkpieandmustard · 02/01/2026 01:57

I like NYD. It feels hopeful and a new start is possible. I always make a veg stew with all the leftover veg from Christmas. We had dumplings too.
Went to the cinema after dinner.
I didn’t do anything on NYE. I prefer Jan 1st.

BashfulClam · 02/01/2026 02:02

If you are Scottish it used to be a bigger deal than Christmas. That has changed which is sad but we still get an extra bank holiday on 2nd January in Scotland so I have no
issue. We also do nothing as cleaning and clothes washing is unlucky on ne’erday. Laundry washes a life away in the coming year, cleaning wipes luck away for the year.
