To think this is absolutely ridiculous?

I’ve recently started a new job for a global attractions and theme park company. My role at the company has a global (it’s in the global corporate side of the business and so is not a site level role so is not linked to any one of their attractions in particular) remit so is not linked to any one of their attractions in particular. The company policy for people who work at global level and not site level is that you will be given an assigned office at their nearest attraction/site/theme park to where you live, so I’ve ended up based at one of their theme parks as that’s their nearest site to me. However the office they’ve given me is in the same building as a ride and all I can hear all day is the ride and it’s driving me insane! It’s so loud that it disrupts teams calls/meetings that I’m on. It’s driving me insane! I share the office with another colleague who has worked here for 4 years and she’s said that she has complained about it too for years and nothing ever gets done about it and they won’t give her another office either. There are other offices on the same site but I’ve asked too and they won’t give me another office either because they say there is no room in any other offices on the site. They will let me work from 1 day a week but other than that I have to be in the office every day which means having to listen to all the loud noises from that ride all day everyday and it’s driving me insane and it’s stopping from working properly! My employer won’t do anything about it though and I’m struggling to cope with it anymore. AIBU to think it’s absolutely ridiculous that they expect us to work like this?

Noise cancelling headphones?

Noise cancelling headphones?

I guess they are an option but I don’t really like the idea of wearing them all day everyday to be honest.

Of course it's ridiculous, are you in a union? Or is there a h&s dept? You really can't be expected to work under those conditions.

Lesser of two evils surely?

Itsmetheflamingo · 30/12/2025 20:22

I’m not sure actually.

this is what the company you work for does. It’s a shop floor experience. The park employees have to work through the noise daily too?

but I also work in a similar role and have to spend December on the shop floor so am feeling very close to the operations at the moment!

Ultimately, if you company won’t move you you don’t have any choice really.

everywhere I’ve worked you can just pitch up at a desk and work where you like- one advantage of hot desking!

I’m not in a union unfortunately. We do have a Health and Safety department but they were not very interested in trying to do anything about it when I spoke to them unfortunately.

Take it via OH and ask for a workplace assessment. The should use noise meters etc. and also take your symptoms and feelings of ill health/mental health into account. To be honest I’d probably go off sick citing environmental noise and that gets GP to provide evidence of your deteriorating mental health.

BillieWiper · 30/12/2025 20:29

That does sound very off putting. If you're not operational relating to that park or even that ride then there's no need to make you be there?

Can you try and ask wfh or just from a building that's mainly offices?

They will only let me work from home for 1 day a week and they won’t move me to another office as they don’t have any space in any other office on the site apparently.

Loops. I use them to drown out the annoying colleagues in my office. They have different variations and are very comfy to wear. If you have no option to wfh or move office then invest in some. They are not expensive on amazon.

Why would the H&S team help if the ride operators are likely exposed to louder noises?

Gawd that's annoying.

If you're nowhere physically near your team during the working day, what would be their reason for denying you more wfh? Are all your team right next to you and the ride also?

haveaword · 30/12/2025 20:35

LTB

Cadenza12 · 30/12/2025 20:37

Were you shown the office during the interview process?

All my team are based in other sites and we connect over teams.

I only deal with teams on this site if I’m dealing with something that affects this site which is not often.

No not this particular office. I was shown other offices on this site though.

This was the reason the health and safety team wouldn’t do anything.

HR?

Join a union - the tuc website will recommend which one if you are unsure

Merlin are highly unlikely to fix this OP. Just start inventing a series of reasons you need to WFH. They probs CBA to enforce you coming in.
