To clap back at a colleague like this?

Colleague came to my desk and said, “do you not answer emails anymore? Because I’ve emailed you four times asking you to come to my desk.”

I replied, “honey, if I don’t have time to answer an email, I definitely don’t have time to walk over to your desk.”

AIBU or was that fair?

Cringe 😬

ScrambledEggs12 · 30/12/2025 17:27

I wouldn't be impressed if a colleague called me 'Honey'!

lazyarse123 · 30/12/2025 17:28

Perfect. You're a colleague not a servant.

PhantomAfternoonTea · 30/12/2025 17:29

Cheeky cow! Her, not you. Who emails to ask that?! Glad she finally got off her arse and walked to your desk.

FionnulaTheCooler · 30/12/2025 17:29

Fair enough, if she had time to email you four times she had time to get off her backside and come and speak to you. Was there an actual reason this conversation needed to take place at her desk rather than yours?

Pavementworrier · 30/12/2025 17:30

Yabu for calling her honey Ur not Samantha Jones from sex and the city.

MrsAnon6 · 30/12/2025 17:30

She was rude. If you want to speak to someone you call them or walk over to their desk yourself. You don’t email them asking them to come to you and certainly not 4 times. I once had a colleague who kept emailing me asking me to phone her and I ignored it.

2026NewTricks · 30/12/2025 17:31

Honey?! No not ok.

Perfectly fine to say I don’t have time. I would have called them or messaged them though, not left 4 emails unanswered.

NewYearNewMee · 30/12/2025 17:31

This is literally a scene from the office - you should give it a watch, it’s hilarious!

Nopersbro · 30/12/2025 17:32

YABU unless your colleague is actually called Honey. SHIBU too, for sending four emails with the same request; it's not like she can't tell electronically whether they somehow haven't reached your email address.

But also, if you've opened and read the email and are going to close and save or delete it, it takes negligible additional time to type and send "no". If your colleague is bombarding you with unnecessary emails, tell your boss.

Millytante · 30/12/2025 17:33

Don’t you people have phones on your desks?
I don’t know the expression ‘clap back’, but if it’s exemplified by inappropriate and sneering words such as ‘Honey’ to a colleague (apparently your senior too), I shan’t adopt it for my own use.

I doubt you’ll receive the round of applause here which you’re inviting!

Arlanymor · 30/12/2025 17:34

Your colleague should have just come over in the first place if she needed to speak to you so desperately - or if it was vitally important that she spoke to you at her desk then she should have picked up the phone. She addressed you in an abrupt way (or so it sounds) and that was unnecessarily impolite.

But your response isn't a 'clap back'. A clap back is something Ja Rule does and then not in an office environment. Did you also wag your index finger back and forth at your colleague at the same time and say: "Nuh uh! Not today. NOT. TO. DAY!"

GreenPoms · 30/12/2025 17:35

Your sentiment isn’t wrong, but your delivery was. Calling someone ‘honey’ in the workplace is highly inappropriate.

Dearg · 30/12/2025 17:36

Who uses email to summon a colleague? Who, other than your boss ‘summons’ anyone?

The ‘Honey’ would irritate me, but that’s minor.

GreenPoms · 30/12/2025 17:42

I don’t think the ‘honey’ is minor. If the work colleague goes to HR, she does have a legitimate grievance in terms of being addressed inappropriately in the workplace.

LetRip · 30/12/2025 18:07

I want to know how she reacted!

vanillalattes · 30/12/2025 18:14

If someone called me "honey" at work I would be so irrationally pissed off.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 30/12/2025 18:18

And then everyone stood up and clapped

Pavementworrier · 30/12/2025 17:30

Just what I was thinking. I read the opening post in her voice.
" Honey" is inappropriate and embarrassing (as is "clap back"). Just say I'm busy, I'll be with you when I can.

Couldyounot · 30/12/2025 18:26

Yep, this is definitely something that happened.

TON618 · 30/12/2025 19:26

All this could have been avoided of she had got up off her arse in the first place. YANBU.

Alittlefrustrated · 30/12/2025 19:29

Hmmmm

She didn't. Because this is fiction
