inkyspells · 27/12/2025 17:50

So my Dad is 83.
Still fit,still independent etc
Today he’s been out into town to his social club.
Rang him tonight to see if he had a nice day.
He said great etc and we just chatting
Then he tells me one of his friends brought in Sandwiches ,scotch eggs and pork pies,Christmas cake, as him and his wife had loads left off Christmas.
My Dad ate a pork pie
Now bare in mind it had no dates,he didn’t know how long it was out of the fridge etc
He just ate it without thinking of the risks
Im now worried sick he’s going to be ill from this.
He said it tasted nice (as if that makes a difference )
My partner thinks I’m crazy
aibu to be worried ?
Will this be okay ?

Do you think his friends want to poison him?

PurplePantsofPower · 27/12/2025 17:53

Yabu and neurotic.

TheMorgenmuffel · 27/12/2025 17:53

Im sure if it was off he would have been able to tell.

Is this something that troubles you often or is this anxiety out of character for you?

Pippa12 · 27/12/2025 17:54

I don’t think anybody wants to be ill at Xmas. We all ate left overs yesterday and today that had been stored correctly? He’s hardly going to quiz them about it.

Stompythedinosaur · 27/12/2025 17:54

It wouldn't even cross my mind tbh.

Surely the go to is to assume other adults have a grasp of food hygiene standards unless they have proved otherwise?

Wisperley · 27/12/2025 17:54

YABU.

ThePoshUns · 27/12/2025 17:55

You do sound neurotic.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 27/12/2025 17:55

God it wouldn’t even occur to me to worry about this. Yes, you’re being completely neurotic.

CountingQuiche · 27/12/2025 17:56

Please get some professional help. You are totally irrational.

UnimatrixZeroOne · 27/12/2025 18:45

Wtf?

CountingQuiche · 27/12/2025 19:34

How do you get your shopping OP?

Do you take a trailer with your fridge-freezer hooked up to a generator on it?

What about the time that the chilled/frozen stuff is in your basket whilst you are shopping? Or in the pickers basket if you only ever shop on-line.

Have you never been to a buffet/party/work lunch?

ShesTheAlbatross · 27/12/2025 19:37

I have pretty severe emetophobia (fear of vomiting) that can cause me to be pretty irrational about food safety etc. And even I think you’re being ridiculous here.

Endofyear · 27/12/2025 19:40

Yes very neurotic 🫤 I think you need to get some help if this is causing you anxiety.

Brightbluesomething · 27/12/2025 19:53

Wow, this is next level neurotic. Leave the man to his pork pie in peace!

Incelebration · 27/12/2025 19:58

Totally neurotic, yes.

BauhausOfEliott · 27/12/2025 20:21

This is about as neurotic as it gets.

Arlanymor · 27/12/2025 20:24

He had a lovely day, he ate some nice food. Most people would be pleased to hear this.

But you must have asked questions to have determined that there was no 'use by date' and to know how it tasted - that IS neurotic. You went down a rabbit hole, whereas most people wouldn't ask about details of the snacks.

As I said - please remind yourself that he had a nice day and he ate some nice food. And that's it. Nothing more to think about.

hollytheheroic · 27/12/2025 20:25

Yes this is completely bonkers.

Papyrophile · 27/12/2025 20:30

Sorry, you are being a bit neurotic. Your nose is a sensitive instrument with an inbuilt facility for detecting the scent of decay. Give the food a sniff, and as long as it smells like food (rather than shit) it's almost certainly fine to eat. A bit more cautious if it's fish. But don't be daft; even oysters can be kept chilled in a fridge in an open container, for five or six days.

BillieWiper · 27/12/2025 20:40

Well when he was young most families probably didn't even own a fridge and they mostly survived unscathed.

Polaopposite · 27/12/2025 20:46

I have anxiety, and even I think you’re being neurotic.

DaisyChain505 · 27/12/2025 20:55

This is the maddest thing ever 🤣

JLou08 · 27/12/2025 22:36

Yes, you're being neurotic. Would you really not eat something a friend gave you unless you could check the dates yourself? Have you ever eaten at someone else's home, a party or Jacobs join at work?

Tartansocksandcrocs · 27/12/2025 22:45

My dad is 84, if you saw what he ate and what his fridge looks like you'd have a hissy fit.

OiFatArse · 27/12/2025 22:50

Yes you're being neurotic and I am quite openly proud of being neurotic! My famous pork pie story is I gave a resident ( I work in a nursing home) residents daughter a pork pie and explicitly said do not give this to your mum as she has swallowing difficulties. Long story short she gave it to her mum
I got hauled over the coals and had to prove my innocence , I can truly believe pork pie dramas 🤣🤣🤣
