Heard this on local radio the other day - appalling lyrics, appalling message dressed up in Christmas cuteness.

I like it, but it's basically the same moral code and punchline as Santa Baby. Once you get over their moral outrage as her being so overtly sexual, I think Sabrina is pretty funny. Not a great role model or anything, but a fabulous showgirl and pop star.

Surely you know what to expect from Sabrina Carpenter?
" Cute" isn't an adjective I would use about anything about her. She is a total embarrassment.

It's not moral outrage at being overtly sexual. It's the message about being with a guy for what you can get out of him rather than being independent. Rather goes against posts on mumsnet replying to women who gave up their jobs to have children with men they're not married to who're now screwing them over.

I think there's a PhD in studying song lyrics and their subtle messages. All the way from the 60s when all women were "my baby" and "my little girl" through Susan Cadogan advertising the thrill she got from being abused, Sheila Ferguson and the Three Degrees hanging on for what crumbs they could get from a man, Lindy Layton putting up with crap from a player and Kylie Minogue forgiving and forgetting, sticking with the devil she knows and tolerating it just so he didn't leave her.

Back to Sabrina, I thought Espresso was just brilliant. Everything else she's done has been just meh.

I suppose I just don't think the "message" of many pop songs aligns with what I'd want for my daughters (or son!) so I can't get worked up about the messaging of a minor 2023 hit - eclipsed by her other song released that Christmas, Nonsense Christmas - which, to me, is basically a modern Santa Baby.

All I Want For Christmas Is You? But what about wanting a career! Baby It's Cold Outside = themes of coercion... I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day shows a worrying lack of economics understanding and intolerance for other religions. Fairytale of New York?! Druggie losers.

I know what you're saying OP but I just think it's not that deep. Merry Christmas 🎄
