No good deed goes unpunished

We’re having a big family Xmas at my Mum’s house. Because of last minute transport issues, my niece couldn’t get her 5 kids there so I very reluctantly offered to pick up 2 of them on our way there. Reluctant because it would lengthen our journey and I don’t like the idea of DD7 spending ages in the car on Xmas day as she has another hour long car ride later this evening to get to DH’s parent’s house.
Anyway, we’ve picked up the two kids and they are both clearly unwell with persistent, phlegmy coughs. Can’t even open the windows as we’re on the motorway. It will be a miracle if we don’t all fall ill.
AIBU to think no good deed goes unpunished?

Why can't you open windows on a motorway?

It's rubbish but I don't understand that bit.

Bettymakesadecision · 25/12/2025 12:44

Great, because this is MN, here goes a massive derailment about why you can or can’t open windows on a motorway.

You can certainly open the windows on a motorway but it's also that time of year where people get coughs and colds

everywhereeverything1 · 25/12/2025 12:54

I have a phlegmy cough. No bug, just the hangover of a cold.

vanillalattes · 25/12/2025 12:56

Surely you’d catch whatever they have anyway, even if you weren’t giving them a lift?

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 25/12/2025 12:56

They'd have been in the house with you anyway

And if you're that worried ... open the windows. Even just a crack to allow air circulation

Happyher · 25/12/2025 13:00

You’ve still done something kind. Focus on the big favour you’ve done her. It’s the true spirit of Christmas. What goes around comes around

Bettymakesadecision · 25/12/2025 13:05

Yes they’d have been in the house anyway but presumably not coughing in my hair for 1.5hrs!

Yes, very unfair of them. Really annoying when people are so inconsiderate. If you are ill stay at home and don't spread your germs.

Bettymakesadecision · 25/12/2025 13:16

Thanks @Happyher, im trying.

Duh it's max 5 degrees out and with the window open it'll be freezing in the car. Being freezing cold reduces your immune system and then you're more likely to pick the cold up anyway.
Honestly OP, people are completely unbelievable on here, there's obtuse and then there's MN.
In future OP why not just have a lovely day at home just playing with dd's new toys with her.

laurini · 25/12/2025 15:34

I would be very annoyed. And no, I wouldn't have the windows open on a freezing winter day on any road haha!

Yes this, just open the window about 1cm.

But the journey is probably done now!
