People going OTT with presents buying

I thought people were cutting back on present giving. My friend texted me asking what should she buy for her sister’s fiancé’s gran for her Christmas present.

I replied - you are not related to her! She thought about it and replied- yeah, so true

People still going OTT on buying presents. People should not get skint on buying presents for people that are not going to
use.

My family were one of the first families not to buy presents for Christmas. We do birthdays instead.

Many Xmas gifts to me smack “gave no effort” Tubs of Quality Street etc, Lynx gift sets for men etc

How do you know this?

I’ve been told on mn that as I’ve “only” bought dd1 one present to unwrap, I should get her some pjs and other bits and pieces as it’s a bit “grinchy”. The single gift is a £1200 gaming PC (that she’ll also use for uni work when she goes next September). Some mumsnetters are nuts about Christmas imo. (That’s not our usual budget but she’s a teen who rarely asks for anything and needs a replacement for her dying laptop. And we are in a good financial position to afford it).

They wouldn’t have said that surely if they knew what the 1 present is and its cost?

Someone’s had one too many Baileys

The first in the world? Or just the UK?? 😂

I’m pretty sure the ancient Athenians had a good stab at it.

urkidding · 22/12/2025 00:38

I buy presents for my children, and my sister and brothers buy for their children. We agreed it was a waste of money a long time ago. I'm very happy. It's mainly women who have the chore of getting and wrapping them. Creation of tasks and worries about money can spoil Christmas for people. It's about goodwill and getting together. Secret Santas in groups are always usually disappointing.

Yep, I had been very clear about the present cost and they felt they would still have got “other bits like pjs”. I was defending the single mum who got 3 gifts and people were telling her to buy more despite having no clue what the three gifts were.

😂surely you meant in your friend/family circle, not in the UK?
I agree that people might go overboard with present and buy unnecessary stuff in cases where a smartshow 3d video card would do just fine, but to each their own. I think cutting back on presents for family is a bit extreme. You do you though, and I agree that getting a gift for a sister’s fiancé’s gran would be too much in my books as well.

Thankfully dd will be incredibly grateful and blown away by the gift and not like mnetter on that thread 😆

BauhausOfEliott · 22/12/2025 12:29

What’s any of this got to do with you? If you don’t want to do presents within your family, don’t do them. It doesn’t matter what other people do.

I don’t know why you thought ‘people‘ had cut back on presents. Was there a nationwide memo? An announcement from No.10? A decree on parchment nailed to the door of the town hall by a man blowing a bugle?

Agree birthdays are a time for presents, your special day. Why do you need presents at xmas.

Blueskiesnotgrey · 22/12/2025 12:34

My teen boys like lynx gift sets....

I like tubs of Roses ...

I agree about Christmas presents for adults though - Christmas is for the children.

NormasArse · 22/12/2025 00:06

Honestly, stop with this!

People are allowed to correct their own spelling errors my goodness.

CoralOP · 22/12/2025 13:06

Well I decided people shouldn't be splurging on birthdays so there is no wasted birthday presents....I guess you need to cancel your birthday plans....

x2boys · 22/12/2025 13:16

Try having a child born at xmas of you think we spend to much on presents
My son is 19 on Boxing day.

callmelover · 22/12/2025 13:24

None of your business what other people buy.
