Nursery Xmas lunch

I am in two minds whether to contact our DD school about their meals and would appreciate some impartial input please!

They had Xmas lunch which the school has been promoting and messaging us about for weeks. We placed our order well in advance, about 3 or 4 weeks ago now. When DD got home she said they ran out of turkey and potatoes so were given carrots, brocolli and “extra” pigs in blankets. Although it was the whole school, DD is in nursery class, so I thought they went first anyway so can’t understand how they ran out knowing the numbers in advance, let alone so soon?!

last week, we ordered a meal that was meant to include beans, as it clearly said on the menu on the app but when she asked was told they were “only for the jacket potatoes” and was given another veg. I didn’t say anything as wasn’t a huge deal, at least there was veg with the meal, but it ended up being the most random combination and definitely didn’t go with the rest.

She’s only had a hot meal 3 times, and 2 out of 3 have not been good. I didn’t say anything about last week, and we only normally do a hot meal as an occasional treat as we’ll have a hot meal in the evening, but AIBU or is that really bad or just how it is? I’m not sure how/whether to approach it or if I’m just being silly because I like my food and I would sooo annoyed if it was me 😅

I wouldn't trust her account as accurate to be honest. I imagine what she actually means is she didn't like those parts of the meal not that they had run out.

If she's not a regular hot dinner eater I'd probably let it go. But otherwise I'd be emailing the Headteacher. If they have contract catering staff the Headteacher can feed this back to them.

It's pretty crap to not serve Christmas Dinner.

Our school.welcome feedback on the catering.

I wouldn't take anything a 3/4 yo said as gospel!

To be honest, you will have bigger things to fight as the years go on. Maybe mention in passing on pick up ‘what a shame the turkey ran out’ because it may well not have done. It wouldn’t run out if they are first for setving. Perhaps it did later on and she’s just repeating something she heard about the older years but thought it was them. Whatever it is, I’d just suck it up. Staff are shattered and you will be viewed dimly. Different matter if she’s regularly not getting food - spears can rattle!

Oh I know what you mean, I’m definitely wary of a 3 year olds account but she said it unprompted. Rather than saying she didn’t like it she specifically said they ran out so gave them something else 🫤

I mean to be fair 3 year olds say lots of nonsensical stuff unprompted. It sounds like she enjoyed the veg and pig in blanket so maybe she asked for more and they gave it her. At this age imaginations are great, realistically it's far more likely she's just embellishing the story, I doubt they ran out of turkey or potatoes.

Catering for 200+ children, some will complex allergies, is hard work. It sounds like someone just got the portions wrong. It happens. Alternatively, she may have just said no to turkey when offered. I couldn’t get worked up about this.

What would you say to the school though? Do you want your kid to be given extra meat one day, or a refund for not getting a specific type of meat/beans?

Rarachocolatebar · 17/12/2025 16:50

I do find it a little hard to believe, I think that’s why I’ve come for a reality check 😂

I appreciate how chaotic rallying/herding and serving that many kids will be. I guess we’ve noticed things during the term that have been way over complicated and disorganised so I can see how it could have happened… but it’s also not the end of the world, she’s not sad about it so I should probably just calm down and just keep my ears open tomorrow if anyone else says the same!

I don’t want anything in return. Just purely feedback and so if it did happen they can review what went wrong and improve next time.
I’m only asking for opinions as it’s all new territory to me and so don’t know if it’s just norm or should be flagged.
