No even a token bonus

I started a new job a month ago. Everyone got a bonus, even people who have been there 3 months got 5%, others more. Am I unreasonable to think I should have got something ? Perhaps just a token 1%of my salary. I am also one the lowest person paid in the company despite my experience.

I am really trying to focus on the positives but this is really getting me down.

I worked in a heavy sales/ recruitment role and was told it's minimum wage with fantastic twice yearly bonuses.
Lots of wink winks, you'll be over the moon come bonus month etc (giving the impression they paid huge bonuses taking the remuneration to more in line with a heavy sales and recruitment role).

......I got £35. £35 fucking pound for six month of recruitment. Ridiculous joke company for many reasons but I sharp left.
But anyway, you know fine well someone shouldn't be entitled to a bonus for 1 month of work.

ladyamy · 17/12/2025 21:06

I wouldn’t call a few hundreds a ‘token bonus’

Pricelessadvice · 17/12/2025 21:06

Bonus for what? It’s usually a bonus for the years work.
The 3-month workers have been very lucky!

gogomomo2 · 17/12/2025 21:22

the bonuses may have been calculated before you even started

PersephoneSmith · 17/12/2025 21:22

I got the usual £10 bonus as I’m in receipt of disability benefits. It’s been £10 for 30 years.
I’d rather they didn’t bother, feels like an insult now.

Thank you all. It is not ai much about the money but just feeling a bit appreciated, just a token for Christmas. I wasn’t expecting a lot but just s Christmas thanks and a few hundreds.

A few HUNDREDS? The entitlement is real.

Try being a teacher or a nurse…

😂😂😂

fetchacloth · 17/12/2025 22:36

A month in a job isn't really long enough.
Most places don't offer a Christmas bonus at all these days, especially in the public sector.

Miaminmoo · 17/12/2025 22:52

You shouldn’t know any of this information - this is why I hate employing people. None of this should be discussed in the workplace. Now you’re fed-up and it’s so counter-productive and toxic.

UnctuousUnicorns · 17/12/2025 23:01

DH has been at his work place for 29 years. His annual "bonus" is having the staff Christmas lunch paid for - so long as it doesn't exceed £30! Mucho generoso, si?! 🤷‍♀️ 😅

The OP works in the HR & Finance department (yet doesn’t know the bonus policy) so will have access to all employee details and payroll payments so has looked and been annoyed at the lack of extra payment for 4 weeks work.

A few hundreds? Seriously? After a month. Try a public sector job where you get nothing, even after 42 years of service! Get real.

I think that should be a sackable offence rather than meriting a bonus.

We get no Christmas bonus. To add insult to injury we got a phishing test email tempting us to click by asking us to select which shop we want our Xmas bonus voucher for 😂

Oh no, that’s really cruel 😂

Enko · 18/12/2025 00:09

In the organisation I work four there is no payrise/bonusif you have increased your salary in the last 3 months. So knce past 3 months you would get it but not befofe. Last year I lost out by 1 month as I had changed role with a pay increase I accepted it.

Redragtoabull · 18/12/2025 00:10

Lol, definitely click bait post ... off you strop into the New Year 👏

People absolutely should talk about pay and wages with each other!
That's how you make sure no one is being ripped off

A company that tries to make its employees not discuss wages is definitely dodgy

Oh you’ve heard of my company then, dodgyemployersrus 🙄🙄🙄 you can’t stop staff talking about salaries and FYI my staff don’t moan because they are all paid fairly based on role and length of service BUT if I give out discretionary bonuses and everyone discussed them then on occasion people would be pissed off. As has happened with OP, who is irritated that after 4 weeks work she has been left out. If anything management should have explained exactly how the bonus works when she started and if she was going to miss out - therefore managing expectations.

Starlight1984 · 17/12/2025 08:52

A few hundred quid bonus? For 4 weeks work?!?!

Or 20 days, assuming dive days a week

ladyamy · 18/12/2025 03:26

Oldandgreyer · 17/12/2025 09:54

Do you not get the 10% discount at supermarkets (etc) as an NHS worker?

Not that same as a bonus and isn’t 10 %

To quote your earlier post

youre "the HR and finance person" with experience and you're not earning much.

i'd get yourself on a negotiation skills course if I were you. Not getting a Christmas bonus is the least of your worries. You aren't valued, full stop!

A few hundreds?! No one in my life gets a bonus of any kind in any of their jobs so getting a "few hundreds" for turning up at work is an alien and ridiculous concept.

If people are only a month in a job, they hardly know where the toilet is never mind anything else 🙄

Yes, gross misconduct, summary dismissal. Not least of all, blabbing about it on MN.

I get that too with ADP but I haven’t earned it, so I’m grateful. If you’d rather they didn’t bother, I assume you donate it to charity.
