my daughters woke up in the middle of the night, coughing, she 5… she’s only coughed about 8-10 times but I am terrified of the ‘super flu’ that’s going round.

ive got a 18 month old, vulnerable baby at home who actually has flu A alongside his sister last year.

my eldest was vaccinated this year, but every day I’ve been nervous of her going to school and now she’s somewhat dry coughing, I’m petrified.

when will I know what it is for sure? And has anyone had it mildly this year?

I took mine to the gp today cause he's has a cough now for 2 weeks he's had other symptoms that have come and gone but the cough is something else. Not flu thankfully he's got a chest infection.

Kindly, YAB (a bit) U to panic about a cough in December

There are the usual bugs circulating too, including RSV. Just manage it as you would usually, encourage hand washing and coughing into tissues and make sure you have a bottle of calpol in.

The super flu is just an early flu season. There’s nothing more scary about it than any other flu strain. My kids both got it. It was grim but no worse than Covid, RSV, stomach bugs going around

Thank you, my then 4 year old had Flu A last year and she wasn’t vaccinated, due to missing it at the school ( she has HFM at the time ) and then the GP didn’t have any! - she got it and was ok.

my then 6 month old got Flu A and got over it in 3-4 days but had to have a nebuliser in a&e but was never admitted.

im scared it’ll be worse this year if they get it, but im hopeful with past ( some what ) immunity to having Flu A & also her being vaccinated, that they won’t get it or get it more mild than last year. I’m suffering with health anxiety at the moment

If it would help, you can get flu tests from Amazon, I used them to check I was clear before returning to work last week x

It’s December, most kids have a cough and for the majority it will be something else.

With a flu person dosent wake up with a slight cough but it hits hard and fast, 38.5+ to 40c fever, chills, fatigue etc- you would know if its flu not just one of common cold strains

DaisyChain505 · 16/12/2025 06:25

deal with things as and when they happen. It does you no favours to panic at every little cough because it may not even materialise into anything and you certainly can’t do anything to stop it if she is getting poorly.

Deal with things as they happen.

No such thing as ‘super flu’ - it’s no worse than regular flu, just a different strain that’s come early.

Flu comes on quickly so it’s probably just a cold - is she achy, well in herself?

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 16/12/2025 06:36

I currently have the “super flu” and DS had it last week. It’s horrible but the symptoms are those of flu. Horrible hacking cough, temperatures, exhaustion.
With a young child I’d expect temperatures definitely.

Thank you.

She is still asleep, so it’s hard to tell. She’s not coughed since 2am, but she is making a funny sound like she’s got snot in her throat when she moves…. but other than that, she is breathing slowly, non noisy, she looks peaceful and her forehead feels cool.

i just hope she wakes up her bubbly self, she will be gutted to miss the nativity today’s she’s Mary!

I’ve actually got some of these, I picked the Flu A and Flu B ones up by mistake for a friend and I’ve now got 5 in my medical cupboard.. I forgot about these :) Will it be too early to tell though?

She’s negative from the PCR Flu A/B swab & she has a cough with a runny nose, lots of sniffles. I’ll see what the school say, I may keep her at home the rest of the week if she feels rubbish still after school.
