Is liquorice root safe for a child?

My DS aged 7 has suspected autism and adhd and chews things constantly (pencils, clothing etc) he is always putting things into his mouth.
My DH came home the other day with some liquorice root which he’s been chewing on and off ever since. It’s stopped him chewing other things, particularly pencils.

My friend said to me she thought it wasn’t suitable for children. I had a look online and iIt does mention about possible issues with consuming too much.

Can anyone shed light on this?

Licorice root as in the candy?
It’s only harmful in large quantities.
Start by checking the ingredient list, it may be anice oil and not licorice root.

I don’t know about Licorice root, apart from the fact DH and I had it, as children without any problems.

IIRC, say older adults eat a 2 oz packet of Licorice sweets every day for a few weeks, can cause heart problems or even death.

My dad used to give it to us as kids (we’re all autistic, including him!) and it didn’t seem to do us any harm.
