Took my first ever week off work sick

I’ve always been one to drag myself in coughing and spluttering without a voice. This week, since Friday last week, I have had what can only be described as flu. Starting with a very painful throat, fatigue, aching muscles and then cycling through other symptoms like thick phlegm, headaches and fevers, even though I’ve rested I’ve got gradually worse.
Because this is a new thing for me to take the entire week off it felt like a lot of mental gymnastics were required to make sure I wasn’t guilt-tripping myself about letting the team down and re-framing it as not wanting to give my colleagues any bugs before Christmas.
I know it sounds like a small thing but it has been good for me to remember that, of course, everything will run fine without me. Also good for my children to see that we should take care or ourselves when we are unwell.

Well done. I have been where you are and it’s awful feeling like you’re letting people down.

You can’t work when you’re ill and I have had an experience with the flu where I didn’t have much time off and didn’t rest. Symptoms lasted for months!! I won’t do it again.

Your health and the health of others is far more important. We all self isolated with Covid, the flu should be no different.
