Building saying I’m hiding upstairs?

Demigoo · 09/12/2025 21:21

Like what is the etiquette? Am I suppose to stand there in the same room and watch him? Am I suppose to offer to help?

I’m genuinely not hiding, I’m just upstairs getting on with other things. Any time he’s shouted me I’ve been there in seconds.

(Also offered him drinks for relevance)

What's the context? Was it a light hearted throw away comment? Was he angry? Were you playing hide and seek?

AgentPidge · 09/12/2025 21:24

Do you mean a builder is working in your house and has asked why you're "hiding upstairs'? No, I wouldn't expect to stay in the same room, I'd be lurking nearby so I'm within earshot in case he calls. Does he need your advice or want you to decide about something and you're not there?

JacquesHarlow · 09/12/2025 21:25

Why don’t you ask him what he needs you for and when? Some of us give keys to builders and go out to work for the day. Others have calls at home working.

Is there a communication issue here (as per 90% of Mumsnet)

What a CF! Tell him that you aren’t free during the day and if he wants you, he’ll need to get your attention. Does he think he can summon you with a finger click?! Why is he assuming you have absolutely zero to do?

Is this part of that weird game thing no one know about?

Endofyear · 09/12/2025 23:06

Wasn't it just a lighthearted jokey comment?

I wouldn't want someone standing over me while I work so I wouldn't do that to someone else, I'd also just go about my business and make sure I'm within earshot if needed which is what it sounds like you were doing. I think it would depend on the tone he said it with as maybe some people do feel they need to stay out of the way or want to avoid small talk.

DriedHydrangea · 09/12/2025 23:10

Was he not just making a joke? I’ve had builders in since September and I’m in my study all day unless I’m needed to consult on something or making a sandwich.

This does remind me of the smile it might never happen school of comments

Give him a withering look and tell him you are working

Surely he cab use the kettle and make his own tea?
