For this burn? Done at the weekend. Really painful and swollen. Was putting on burn cream which is chlorhexadine gluconate but it seemed to irritate it so have put aloe Vera gel on. Help, its horrible 😢😞😔

Yes, get it seen. I used to work on a burns unit and would always recommend medical advice for a burn like yours.

Fiftyandme · 02/12/2025 19:37

How big is it?

Fiftyandme · 02/12/2025 19:39

Just seen how big - go to pharmacy and ask their advice - looks like a second degree.

No to A&E.

However if there’s a late opening supermarket with a pharmacy in it you could get a pharmacist to take a look or minor injuries tomorrow.

Hydrocolloid dressing is my advice, ask at your local pharmacy.
The Hydrocolloid dressing will exclude the air, which will help stop some of the discomfort, minimise the risk of contamination and subsequent risk of infection, and provide a moist healing environment which is best for wound healing. The dressing can stay on for a week, unless it leaks or falls off., when you can replace it with another one. Read the instructions carefully as they can be tricky to apply if you are not familiar with them. (retired GPNurse)

Take some painkillers tonight and pop into a pharmacy in the morning - they will be able to tell you if you need a doctor (for example, if there's signs of infection) or if you need to cover it with a dressing. My son had a horrible scald on his arm, much larger than that and we used manuka honey dressings, it cleared up very quickly and didn't scar.

Pain is good. It probably means it’s not full thickness so will heal. Keep it covered. Letting it dry out slows down the migration of new skin cells across the wound. Use a dressing such as Tegaderm with a non-stick pad. It seals the wound and cushions it. Once sealed the nerve endings stop pinging.

I shaved off the tip of my finger with a mandolin right down to the nerve endings. It healed quickly with airtight dressing. The skin heals by secondary intention and the cells need a moist environment to migrate easily. It’s much slower if it dries out and scabs over.

This was my burn (from a steam iron).
It has taken 6 weeks to heal. I bought some special burn dressings for it as I was finding non adherent dressings kept sticking to it.

Try Hydrogel dressings, this is a dressing we used for burns in community nursing. It will cool and helps manage pain.

Why no more aloe Vera or burn cream? Its on my hand and its probably about the size of a 1 pence piece. I thought cling film was just for the initial bit when youve just burnt yourself? I did it 2 days ago. Thank you so much for replying

Well, as the cream made it worse and the aloe vera hasn't helped, that's a bit of a clue there.

Get it checked out because it's on your hand and you're constantly moving it around - and the pain, obviously.

Whats with the sarky tone to the first bit of your reply? Im in pain with an injury, I didn't need that thanks.
Went to the pharmacy and the pharmacist advised to keep putting aloe Vera gel on.
