I had a small gynae operation last week
I had a week off but I’m due back Monday shall I go back or have another week off? Especially if I’m not right yet? Thanks

Don't go back if you're not ready.
It can take time to heal inside.

Isobel201 · 26/11/2025 16:08

Depends on how you're feeling, if you don't feel right, request another week.

MatildaTheCat · 26/11/2025 16:13

If you are feeling unwell enough to not work then you’ll need a certificate from your doctor after the first week. Nobody here can answer based on the information you have given.

I’ve had 2 gynae surgeries, first surgery I didn’t go back to work for 2 weeks, it was recommended by the hospital i take at least a week off. The second surgery I went back to work after 3 days, it was recommended I take a week off but I felt fine within myself and I was up and about.
Take the minimum recommended by the hospital, if you don’t feel fully recovered take more time off.
Speedy recovery to you.

Don’t go back until you feel well, and confident that the activities you engage in won’t worsen any post-op symptoms - particularly important to avoid heavy lifting, for example.

FinallyMovingHouse · 26/11/2025 16:35

What did the surgeon advise was the recovery period for the op?

ghostiewhisp · 26/11/2025 16:42

See how you feel
the hospital wanted to sign me off for 8 weeks but I asked for 2 weeks, then I ended up extending for another week

Onemorestepalongtheroad · 26/11/2025 16:45

I had a gynea op recently and thought a week would be enough but ended up taking two. I could probably have got through it if I’d gone back but I still felt pretty rubbish. Better to take weeks and go back feeling properly well.

What do you mean 'especially if I'm not right'? Do you mean you might not go back even if you are ok?

He came to sss ne in recovery and I was too high on pain relief to remember what he said 🫢

I'd take the time off, don't go back until you feel 100%. In fact, take even longer if you need to.

mamagogo1 · 27/11/2025 19:05

Depends on the surgery and how you have recovered plus of course your job. I went straight to work after having day surgery under local (my choice as didn’t want anything stronger, only took 5 minutes. But other surgeries require 6 weeks recovery
