Woman in front of me today at shop buying a load of secret santa stuff this morning. I heard her telling the assistant. She also mentioned some of it was for a lucky dip. It was all sweets and chocolate too.

Can people not make a stand now and refuse to get sucked into all this crap.

Just because of a fairytale about a virgin birth sometime in December possibly the whole countries been brainwashed for years, into thinking people have got to have presents and secret santas and lucky díps etc?

Does anyone actually need any of this stuff anyway and more chocolate?
Will the world end if we start to push back?

Its so heavily entrenched into people's minds, they feel its Just something they must do.

I look forward to the day more people start to reject these things and think for themselves?

Is this really want I want to do or am im doing it because its something I have always done?

Do people really need what i am buying?
Martin Lewis seems to be on track with it.
Its ugly.

But consume, consume, consume is what drives the economy! Growth is what we desperately need right now!

A huge portion of this toot is imported, damaging the environment with it's manufacture, transport and disposal

Huge amounts will end up in landfill and if anything about the latest waste disposal scandals hasn't sunk in yet, there is no 'away'

Greedybilly · 26/11/2025 16:23

And...at the risk of being a Grinch
( who I really loathe) Work secret santas are just cringey - adults trying desperately to have 'fun' by shopping for crap.
I really like my colleagues but they aren't my mates and they don't need any extra crap.

rainbowunicorn22 · 26/11/2025 16:23

flipping heck who let the happy folk out for the day

CraftyGin · 26/11/2025 16:25

I don't think the people who believe in the virgin birth are the ones buying the tat.

CremeBruhlee · 26/11/2025 16:27

It’s not all or nothing, why so angry and judgy? I use the same decorations that I have used for years, book advent we add a book to each year but I’m not having someone judging me for doing a Christmas Eve box with Christmas PJs, sweets, hot chocolate etc, my kids love it, I love it and we use the PJs and enjoy the rest.

ABeerInTheSunshineMakesMeHappy · 26/11/2025 16:27

@Isittimeformynapyet
Hoping that box of Roses goes in the food bank trolley, rather than your actual bin.

ticktockitsNCtime · 26/11/2025 16:30

I agree. We are in the process of simplifying our Christmases now, and we'd like to simplify them even more. It's a process. But it's important for the planet to be less wasteful.

Yeah, I usually take them to a group thing I go to. I was being slightly hyperbolic.

Greedybilly · 26/11/2025 16:31

@Autumn38I agree there must be a mid way point here.
Buy less?/start shopping later?/buy second hand? /buy less but better quality? /reuse or make things?
It doesn't need to be completely all or nothing does it?

GasPanic · 26/11/2025 16:32

Halloween is just as bad for tat.

Maybe I will try austerity Christmas one year.

Advent calender made out of newspaper with famous figures behind door.
Christmas candle with a snowman on it drawn in felt tip.
Potato and lentil stew for Christmas day.
Christmas tree from the twigs outside.
I also have some mahonia which looks a bit like holly if I put red balls on it.
Home brew.
And of course don't forget the hair shirt.

For Boxing Day could invite the Four Yorkshiremen over to discuss who is being most extravagent.

Greedybilly · 26/11/2025 16:35

@GasPanic🤣🤣🤣🤣

RollOnSunshine · 26/11/2025 16:38

If it helps the economy and the public purse it cannot be a bad thing. The lord must realise how much of it Labour are pissing up the wall.

Boomer55 · 26/11/2025 16:40

People do what they want to do. Nothing to do with anyone else. 🤷‍♀️

Greedybilly · 26/11/2025 16:41

@RollOnSunshinebut it's not helping the economy ( or the environment) us all buying cheap plastic rubbish from China though is it?

RollOnSunshine · 26/11/2025 16:43

@Greedybilly

I must have missed the part where OP said she went to a shop in China.

PassingStranger · 26/11/2025 16:46

F1ref1y · 26/11/2025 14:56

You're right OP, its bad for the struggling environment and its not great for kids to have so much shit. But you will get called a Scrooge because apparently living in a world that is full of plastic tat is more important than all the microplastics in our brains.

As posted on here earlier a daughter telling her mum she loves her dad more because he buys her more presents.
How hideous is that?
Her mind is already basing everything on how much stuff she can collect.

As for the comments who let the happy folk out today, and mind your own business etc, that's not addressing the actual point in the discussion..
If that's all you can say, then you've lost. Pointless comments.

You should admit you've been brainwashed since birth, just like your parents were, and their parents before them etc!!@

Every year you've grown up thinking you must buy and receive presents at xmas. No matter how stressful, hard, boring or expensive it is. You do it because its what you've always done. Your scared to stop it.

Thankfully Martin Lewis has realised too, and some people on here are going that way and realising.
I wonder how many people are wrapping their stuff in paper that dosent automatically go in the bin either?

Greedybilly · 26/11/2025 16:46

@RollOnSunshineplease say you're joking?!

IwishIhadcheese · 26/11/2025 16:49

I’m not into tat and I love Christmas but I don’t judge those who find joy from spending their money on whatever they want.
It’s up to them.

Whichone1 · 26/11/2025 16:51

I agree with you! It’s mad. We have cut it right back. Have you seen the Martin Lewis video about Christmas presents? It’s so on point!

One sees so many posts on here about how overwhelming Christmas is and it’s correct, it’s got out of hand. Christmas jumper days , school baking , secret Santa at work, work parties , no wonder people get burnt out!

We do all the lovely things- Christmas walks, films, crafts - not the materialistic stuff .

BauhausOfEliott · 26/11/2025 16:51

I don’t buy loads of stuff at Christmas.

I do, however, think it’s absolutely none of my business what anyone else buys and I don’t stand in shopping queues feeling superior to other shoppers about it.

Because what the hell do I know about their lives, finances and motivations? About as much as you, I expect: fuck all.

Honestly, people who think the just world needs them, above all others, to issue a decree to solve a perceived problem - as if nobody else will ever have thought of their proposed remedy and we’ll all think ‘Wow, how radical! Can’t believe I didn’t consider this before!’ - really are a special kind of twat.

Usually comes with a good old undertone of colossal snobbery, I’ve noticed.

Boomer55 · 26/11/2025 16:40

People do what they want to do. Nothing to do with anyone else. 🤷‍♀️

But why do they do it. Is it because they've grown up thinking thats what you do every year, without thinking for themselves.

Who said we have to carry on with things that were invented years ago.
The Victorians are all long dead.

carconcerns · 26/11/2025 16:53

I would have 100% voted in agreement with you were it not for the fact that you rudely disregarded the faith of a huge proportion of the population!

Gettingbysomehow · 26/11/2025 16:53

I have nothing to do with any of it, I'm sick of chocolate which I don't like or eat and crappy toiletries. Everyone is too fat anyway, have fun getting that stone and a half off in the new year.

Thewindowdressing · 26/11/2025 16:57

What do Victorians have to do with thisConfused

TY78910 · 26/11/2025 17:01

YANBU to have an opinion on whether you think it’s tat and whether you personally want to participate in such gift giving.

what you are being VU about is that this woman was clearly excited about what she was doing, so much so she felt the need to talk about her activity and then taking it to MN to judge her on it. Do your thing, stop zapping the joy out of others.
