I seem to be in a never ending cycle of constipation and then diarrhoea. When the diarrhoea comes it’s followed by the most painful trapped wind - like I can’t even stand up straight. Windeze helps relieve this, but then the cycle starts again 😔

I’m 45 and defo in peri menopause. I don’t know whether this is classic IBS or something else? I’ve recently changed to lacto free milk as I thought this would help.

any suggestions welcome

This is 100% something you’re eating.

I managed by cutting out all dairy, wheat, grains and other cereals. Nuts too.

I ate only meat, eggs, butter and a small amount of very low fibre vegetables. Now I don’t even fart anymore unless I eat something with fibre.

See GP for general tests to rule out anything untoward. Ask for coeliac blood test too

if all clear yoyr go to is the Monash app and low fodmap diet

Don't cut out anything before seeing GP

It's definitely something not agreeing with you.

That's good news, sort of, but a massive pain in the arse trying to figure out what it is.

Get checked out first then do the boring elimination thing.

parietal · 24/11/2025 12:36

Could this be impacted blockage? Do see the GP and they might recommend a strong laxative for cleaning things out.

I hope you've seen a dietician. This sounds like quite a restricted diet, v difficult to meet all your nutritional requirements

ScaryM0nster · 24/11/2025 14:23

Are you ever actually getting past being constipated? Or is it just overflow diarrhoea?

Worth seeing GP either way, supported by a food / bowel diary.

Pffft a dietician nearly gave me diabetes with her daily carb recommendations. Luckily I caught it in time.

I’ve eaten this way for a decade and I’m perfectly healthy. Yes I have regular blood tests, yes I’ve had a coronary artery calcium scan with contrast and my score was zero.

Edited to add that the foods I eat are THE most nutritionally dense.

Salvadoridory · 24/11/2025 16:41

Please ask for a CA125 and ultrasound. Rule out anything untoward before being fobbed off with IBS. Its likely something like diverticulitis disease or inflammation but best to be sure if you are in the UK with the issues in getting listened to by GPs

Lifetime risk for osteoporosis and bowel issues like diverticulitis....

PegDope · 25/11/2025 08:31

@JollyGreenSnake 😂😂😂😂😂😂

Sure. Eating meat and vegetables is soooooo bad for me!

How exactly is eating my nutrient dense food going to cause osteoporosis? Explain the physiological mechanism.

Not eating fibre cured my gut issues. Try it, you seem quite full of shite.

Exactly this. Menopause does cause constipation in many people. I would see the doctor before making any more changes to your diet.

For lack of fibre, you're far more likely to face issues relating to lack of gut health. Tell me I'm wrong after you've had proper specialist consultation

Thanks to everyone for replying

I definitely think I'm impacted - On monday it was a run to the toilet several times kind of day. It's been all quiet on the toilet front since then - nada nothing. We had a takeaway pizza last night, it was amazing but still nothing doing on the toilet front

I'm going to speak to the GP but might consider a really strong laxative and cancel any plans I might have 😝

Have a read of the ERIC info. It’s aimed at kids, but applies the same.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 27/11/2025 11:38

Dairy does this to me. A lot of people are lactose intolerant.
