Am I blocked on WhatsApp?

I've recently been taking to someone again on WhatsApp who has form basically of being very flaky.
We had a lovely chat on Saturday night and are due to meet up this weekend. But I sent a message earlier and it only has 1 tick. He's never off his phone so I was wondering if I'm blocked again.. but his profile pic is still showing and I've enlarged it and cleared my cache and it's still there. So can I assume I'm not blocked? Tbh I don't really care because I know what he's like but would be nice to know haha.

If you can see his profile picture, I think you are not blocked. It seems like the message has not delivered, maybe a connection issue or a glitch which does happen sometimes.

Thank you. I think his last seen was switched off so I can't use that as an indicator. I'll see what happens. If I don't hear back then I'll assume he's playing silly bastards again

You can switch the ticks off. One grey tick will show but you cannot tell if the message has sent or been read. Or, his phone could be switched off.

BendingSpoons · 18/11/2025 21:59

I had this. I was messaging another school mum about a playdate. The message stayed on 1 grey tick and never went to 2 ticks to say it was delivered even several days later. It was very unlikely she would have blocked me. Her DD told her I had messaged and she then went into our chat, saw my message and replied. It must have been a weird glitch, maybe a message that came through when she had no signal or something.

Cross post with this. I didn't know you could turn off 'received' ticks.

I don’t think you can?

1 tick means not delivered. 2 grey ticks is delivered but you can’t see if it’s been read.

Anyway, I got blocked. The profile photo didn’t instantly disappear. Just one grey tick for a while.

Namechangetry · 18/11/2025 22:04

Why are you wasting your time and energy on a man who has blocked you more than once? You can do better.

I highly doubt there’s a setting that allows this.

Silly bastards again? He has form?

This is exactly what I was thinking.

It's possible they both can.

Either way, unless they thrive on drama I can't see what either of them would get out of it.

There is.

It's called 'Turn off read receipts'.

londongirl12 · 18/11/2025 22:09

What do you mean, blocked “again”? My god, way too much drama dealing with someone who blocks/unblocks.

RedFlagsAllOver · 18/11/2025 22:09

U can't turn off ticks. You can only turn off read receipts. So could stay as 2 grey ticks and be read.

That's not the same thing, youre talking about the messages being read, OP is talking about whether they've been delivered

Watto1 · 18/11/2025 22:11

My messages to dp sometimes do this. I’m pretty sure I’m not blocked! The other day I was away with work and he messaged me goodnight. It arrived at 10am the next morning. Sometimes WhatsApp has these little glitches.

If you turn them off your end, it also means you cannot see if messages you've sent have been received or read.

I have mine off because I can't be doing with people questioning why I haven't responded to messages! 😅

Lol. I’m not an alien.

Turning off read receipts is having the blue colour turned off and it permanently showing as grey, regardless of whether it’s been read or not.

I said there wasn’t a setting where you can permanently keep it at one tick if it’s been delivered.

Ahh, ok. Fair dos.

RedFlagsAllOver · 18/11/2025 22:30

Ok I just tested it with someone at home and their profile pic was gone when I clicked on it and after all that he's just replied lol.

Ah yes, apologies!! I just looked. My messages have two grey ticks, they just don't turn blue when read.

WhatMe123 · 18/11/2025 23:07

I'm sure you can still see a profile if blocked. You can turn off the blue read ticks but I'm sue you can't tie off the grey ones. One grey tick normally means your either blocked or his phone is out of signal or is on flight mode etc so it's not been delivered id say if by tomorrow it's still on one tick your blocked sorry op

WhatMe123 · 18/11/2025 23:08

Sorry just seen your update op ☺️☺️

raise your bar

This. Why would someone turn off read receipts?

An ex of mine went from being totally open with his phone to complete panic if I even went close to it (I am not a snooper). After that it was always away in his pocket. Then gradual lockdown on Whatapp: 'online' switched off: followed by 'last seen' and finally 'read receipts' went off.

...it is a sign of a player. It's not a normal, open and honest way of being.

TheCheekySloth · 19/11/2025 00:11

My whatsapp i have turned all ticks off i can read them but they wont show you i have.
I also turned off active online so no one knows if im online last online or read or looked at messages.
