I am horrified that five young people the age of my own kids have lost their lives. A VW Golf in a crash with a Toyota Land Cruiser..... The five dead youngsters were all in the Golf, which is not really a surprise. However, according to several different reports, there appears to have been a sixth passenger in the Golf.... who has survived, but VW Golfs only have five seats, don't they?
I'm going to hug my kids tonight, but remind them that there's a reason seatbelts are compulsory.

What are you wondering?

Young people in car break law. Surely that does not come as a genuine shock.

Drivers who break motoring laws are significantly more likely to be involved in accidents

CheezePleeze · 16/11/2025 21:47

Yes, it's not clear what you're wondering about OP?

AwkwardPaws27 · 16/11/2025 21:52

Definitely a good example to use as a reminder for your teens, but honestly who didn't do something as a teenager that in hindsight was reckless? I certainly had more than a few moments that make me wonder what the hell I was thinking, looking back now, so I can't and won't judge, especially not when those young people have met with the worst consequences.

TheNightingalesStarling · 16/11/2025 21:56

If there were 6 people in the car, it would explain why 5 people died... at least one was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown about in the crash.

Another senseless tragedy really. The poor families.

This thread is in really poor taste actually. I’m not normally one to be all disapproving about topics in the news being discussed but I really don’t like this, it’s unpleasant and reminding your ‘kids’ about seatbelts - they were twenty three, young people certainly and an absolute tragedy but not ‘kids.’

LancashireButterPie · 16/11/2025 22:02

May they rest in peace. As a mother, I have to try hard to manage my anxiety when my kids are out driving in storms or late at night. My heart goes out to their families.

HoskinsChoice · 16/11/2025 22:06

It's literally a day since this happened and a thread has been created for a bit of gossip. Really?! This is incredibly poor taste, you should be ashamed OP, now is not the time.

The BBC have given the police statement verbatim. Five people in the Golf and three in the other vehicle: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cd7rqd33dn1o

I'm not sure of the point of your post, but I thought it important to make the correction to avoid idle, unfounded and unfair assumptions.

"Supt Armstrong said another occupant of the Volkswagen Golf, a male in his 20s, was removed and taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, for treatment of serious non-life-threatening injuries."

It's right there.

Actually two people in the other vehicle. You didn’t even read the story you linked to!

So very sad.

Thankfully cars are safer these days and you don't hear as many fatal crashes as say in the 1990's.

Yes I read there were 6 people in the car and yes a Golf has a maximum seating capacity of 5. Even with 5 it would have been uncomfortable.

They weren't teens, they were in their 20's, age 21-24. Of course we don't know the circumstances yet. May they rest in peace and condolences to their loved ones. I've lost someone through an RTC and it really is so traumatic.

Glitterybee · 17/11/2025 01:08

This happened not far from me and it’s been on the radio/news here all day.

So very sad.
