Comment from DSIL - insensitive or deliberately rude?

I would welcome others thoughts on whether I’m rightly upset over this or not.

We are back from a family lunch. DSIL was talking about how her card has been blocked for dodgy activity which wasn’t her and one of the attempted transactions was to Iceland. She basically said ‘as if the bank asked me whether I attempted that payment. Is there anything more insulting than people thinking you shop at Iceland’.

We’ve hosted in the past with Iceland food as it’s ideal for the kids and DSIL knows this.

So I am now wondering whether she was just forgetful today or deliberately making a point. DH thinks I’m being ridiculous and I am making an issue out of nothing.

Does she have form for catty comments? If not I’d assume it wasn’t a dig. But it was a snobby comment

No not really.

That's probably her opinion.

She won't have thought about it in relation to your catering.

I don't know. It does seem an odd comment to make, the bank doesn't know her so why would they have an opinion on where she shops. I don't shop at Booths but I have popped in a couple of times when I've been passing on my way home. I'm usually in the cheap supermarkets but I wouldn't have expected the bank to pick up fraud when I went to Booths, so I am inclined to think it was a dig.

"You were quite happy when you were face down in that prawn ring the other day!"

No not really.

In that case I’d assume she just forgot.

Snobby comments like that are always risky though, there’s always a chance the people you’re speaking to will do the thing you’re sneering at!

TravelPanic · 16/11/2025 19:01

I’m sure she just forgot and it was a foot in mouth comment if she’s not normally snobby. Both DH and I have accidentally said things that we’ve thought “oh god!” about later. It happens. Feels like you’re maybe sensitive for some reason as otherwise you’d just have brushed this off?

Bellyblueboy · 16/11/2025 19:28

It was a silly joke. She probably cringed afterwards.
