neighbours have installed the ACTUAL SUN on the side of their house?

tigerlover1 · 16/11/2025 10:39

So the neighbours are having their house renovated, all very normal, lots of banging and sawing etc. Fine, I can cope. But today the builders installed what I can only describe as a star-level security light.

Previously they had a normal little motion sensor light — you know, the standard “pop out to the bins without tripping over the cat” level of brightness. NOW? Now it’s like they’ve strapped a NASA-grade solar flare to the wall. I swear my bedroom is lit up like I’m orbiting the sun closer than Mercury. If I open the curtains I half expect David Attenborough to narrate the birth of a new planet.

And the sensor?? Oh. My. God. It’s going off ALL night. Breeze? On. Moth flapping its wings three streets away? On. Me blinking too loudly? On.
I’m lying in bed feeling like I’m sleeping on the set of Interstellar.
WIBU to ring the builders tomorrow and politely ask if they can angle it down a bit or maybe ?

Agree. I love AI, but I hate the lazy use of AI.

ETA the only reason I even chimed in is because of all the people falling over themselves to gush over the OP's 'amazing' writing style. They just looked a bit silly when it's so clearly Chat GPT and some may want to know, others don't care.

It's up there with the posters who come to a thread about a film/show to say "I don't know, I haven't watched it" in terms of usefulness!

I'm just struggling to work out why someone would get so invested in defending AI generated text. It's important to me because it affects my livelihood. You may find it tedious but I'd rather people call out AI slop than just accepting it as the new normal.

Because it made people laugh. As simple as that.
There's not much joy around these days, y'know.

Exactly. Use it to tidy up your writing because you don’t know how to phrase it, or to check grammar or spelling. That’s fine. But I come here for human interaction, not to read stuff written by AI or the opinions of AI.

JassyRadlett · 16/11/2025 16:33

They didn't even use an em dash, that's the hilarious thing. Or at the very least inserted spaces around the em (phone text is small!)

The post may be AI generated. I don't know and I don't really care. Even if it is, it doesn't mean it's a bot, loads of people use GPT to help them compose text these days.

Even if it's a bot... policing the forums to unuseability fuelled by the self-righteous warmth of total certainty is likely to make forums just as unusable as the thing being policed.

They did, it’s definitely longer than an en dash, it’s the width of an M which is why it’s called that regardless of formatting arounf it, and chatgpt does put spaces around dashes.

I am usually on your side of this, I find long threads of is-it-AI tedious, but this post is such a clear cut case and everyone raving about it being brilliant writing while it’s superficially very smooth but as I’ve pointed out in posts above contains meaningless jumbles of words and is slightly wrong about what humans would do in this situation is such a good example of how AI will degrade the Internet by dazzling people into failing to read properly.

AutumnClouds · 16/11/2025 17:05

LLMs are amazing but passing off LLM generated text as human generated is not

Does GPT use em dashes incorrectly? I've only ever seen it spit them out with proper US grammar - ie without spaces, even when asked to put the writing into non-US English.

Will take your word for it on the length of the dash - like I said, my eyesight is not that good on a small screen!

Must go and have a play with GPT to see if I can persuade it to serve me up a spaced em dash, because I'm exactly that nerdy.

Like I said - no idea whether OP is a bot or not, or using AI or not (the two not being perfectly correlated). But the imperfect em did stand out to me as non-standard.

Hang on a minute, if they installed it today then how do you know what it’s like at night, and moreover how did you take the picture?

Ahhhahah I can’t believe I missed that while faffing around with NASA-grade solar flares and calling the builders directly.

Like an LLM? Why would you want to? It sounds contrived.

What LLM comes out with is no more contrived than the texts created by humans that all this software is attempting to emulate.

It's also the random bolding and the floral language. Its a dead giveaway.

Yes it's very chatgpt. Strange post, what prompts did you use? Make it funny for a forum? Are you testing it out????

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 16/11/2025 21:01

came back to this thread and found out about em dashes. Never knew this existed. Didn’t expect to learn that today!

People use em-dashes all the time if they're writing in Word or what have you, but it's not that easy to get them to show in a regular post unless you're copying and pasting from elsewhere - most people use en-dashes if they're using them informally (ime).

But yeah that light would annoy me too.

— you just hold down the hyphen on your phone keyboard and it pops right up.

It’s definitely an em dash. See below and you can compare to OP.

Hyphen -
En –
Em —

Get a torch with the 'light of a thousand candles' and shine it back at them. They'll soon get the msg.

SpaceRaccoon · 16/11/2025 11:14

It's not just the em dashes. It's the rhetorical question style. It's pretty obvious and distinctive.

yes, it’s obvious and nothing to do with the dashes

Bones101 · 17/11/2025 00:36

They need it taken down. Disgraceful.

JassyRadlett · 16/11/2025 16:23

Maybe we need to have a thread that is specifically I'M A PROFESSIONAL WHO USES AI/LLMs EXTENSIVELY cage fighting.

Everything LLMs use is because lots of writers use them. Once you start using the rule of fucking three as a gotcha in your amateur Marpleing you really use up a lot of credibility. The rule of three is probably the most overused device in writing, full stop - which is why LLMs love it.

If OP used AI, props to them for switching the em to en.

I mean, feel free to carry out all the tedious troll hunting you want. Just don't be surprised when other people point out just how tedious and self-important you're being.

Apologies for the use of en bot em: this is because I was typing on my phone and, unbelievably, the keyboard available doesn’t include an em dash. I think you were referring to me with this comment rather than the OP who did actually commit the (alleged) crime of using a proper em dash which many illiterate people assume only an AI would do. It’s so bizarre and silly and I’m so sick of seeinf these silly comments any time anybody does use such puntuation, as well as sick of silly phone keypads that don’t even include these punctuation marks so that they can be used correctly and people are forced to substitute like I did or not use them at all.

MarbleHunt · 17/11/2025 03:05

WonderfulSmith · 16/11/2025 17:01

Are people really using AI to “tidy up” posts on forums like this? Surely that wouldn’t be necessary. It’s basic communication. What would be the point of that or possible need for it, unless they were unable to write in sentences? It really is tiresome that whenever anybody writes anything remotely descriptive, detailed or using more complex sentence structure this same nonsense is posted about how it must be AI. I think it’s also against Mumsnet Talk Guidelines, is it not, to “troll hunt” in such a manner? I believe you are meant to report any supposedly “suspect” posts to MNHQ not derail the thread with unevidenced and potentially spurious accusations.

RocketNan · 17/11/2025 04:26

If your neighbours are assholes who would take delight in annoying you: What you want is some ice cubes and a sling shot/tennis racket. Fire them at the light to smash it. Ice cubes melt leaving no trace. Plausible deniability.

But see posts above by @WonderfulSmith pointing out the story doesn’t make logical sense and me pointing out that the metaphors don’t make sense and the suggested action is bizarre - when the Internet fills up with this kind of superficially clever but actually nonsensical content we lose an amazing resource so it’s important to analyse what’s happening with increasing spamming of AI content through every channel. Especially when people are so impressed by it that they miss the fact it doesn’t make sense.

There lots of posts that are barely comprehensible because of poor literacy skills or having English as an additional language. It’s perfectly reasonable to use AI to tidy it up so your post about a serious matter is understandable.

The opening post is clearly AI. Not just because is the use of language and em dashes but that it doesn’t make sense. Someone who could write like that would be able to make sense.
