To hate being followed around sofa shops…

I want a new sofa right and I’m happy for a sales assistant to introduce themselves on entry to the shop and then maybe check in with me after it looks like I’ve decided on one or looked at lots but OMG went in 3 shops in a row (all in the same like complex of shops) and they hound you listing all the deals when I haven’t even looked at that sofa yet… said I didn’t want leather one man is trying to persuade me to?! That’s surely just personal preference… order now and il LOCK IN THAT PRICE like ok no it’s too much!

I just say very directly "I'd like to browse on my own first please. I'll let you know when I'm ready".

So I did in the 3rd shop (when I could get a word in) and they held their hands up and said ‘of course absolutely I’m here when you’re ready!’ but then 3mins later (these are large shop floors) he comes back ‘how are we doing?’ Stoppppp man

I detest it - puts me right off normally I leave the store as I can’t abide these tactics.

Im the same in any kind of store. When are retailers going to realise this is not what the public want. I love small boutiques but if they are empty I don’t go in because I know what’s to come.

Also, why on earth do cosmetic counters have testers? I have to move by stealth to try to touch them, scan for danger, spray (if I can get this far) then bolt

I absolutely hate this kind of hounding too. I recently requested more information on a house on a new build estate. I’ve been called, text and emailed everyday since. Go away!! It’s so off putting

YANBU OP. Drives me insane as well. Just let me look first!

Another bugbear is websites wanting your email address before allowing you to check ticket availability. If there’s no availability for the date/time I would like I then find myself receiving emails with, “did you forget to check out or is there something we can help you with”. See also the issue with issuing paper receipts in shops 😂 I’m going to set up a separate email address just for those now.

Sofa and furniture places would probably get far more trade if they just let people browse first uninterrupted.

This. Contacted a company for a very specific thing for work. I am getting multiple phonecalls daily from other none related departments offering me multiple services I do not need, oddily the only department I am not hearing from is the one I actually contacted.

I left a mattress shop last week for this reason

Canopop · 09/11/2025 09:54

I assume they’re commission based and so really trying to make their money but it’s just enraging to me 🙃

Don’t blame you, I wanted to but equally I want a new sofa and wanted to browse them at my own pace .. frustrating isn’t it!

I hate being followed around any shop . There’s nothing that makes me leave said shops quicker and I don’t know why retail hasn’t cottoned on to this . If I want help I’ll ask .

Omg when i worked in a shop i hated bothering customers too much. I always said hello etc left them to it and maybe approched after a bit.

My manager on the other hand was always forcing us to approach striaght away and keep going back 🫣

I remember one Monday morning, slowest day when we usually put the stock out. We had some big managers visiting and we were not allowed to put the stock out as it looked too messy. We had to straighten stuff on the racks (which was done the night before so didnt need done) and serve all the customers.

There were 3 of us just standing there barely doing anything cause there were no customers. One showed up while my manager was speaking to our 'special guests'. My manager didnt see my colleague approach her and ask if she needed help. The customer then started browsing in front of me and my manager made quite animated gestures for me to approach.I knew my colleague behind the divide who couldnt see would approach to and of course she did. Custimer high tailed it out of there cause in 5 mins she was approached 3 times.

Of course my manager went straight to me afterwards complaining that I didnt approach etc. I did tell her she was chased out cause everyone approached her.

I walked into a sofa shop recently with DH.

THREE salesmen immediately started making a beeline for us. We both said “fuck this” and just walked straight back out again.

Went into British Heart Foundation, got an amazing sofa for £300 plus a new mirror and sideboard, delivered the next day.
