To have challenged this man....

...and to think men just don't expect to be challenged by women?

I was walking along our village high street with my 4yo and 2yo in her buggy around 5.30 so already dark.

As we approached a side road intending to cross it a car came along. We slowed down to wait, car slowed down, then proceeded to drive up over the curb (and double yellows) and park right in the middle of the pavement on the other side. (A massive sweeping pavement so plenty of room but that's not my point)

So we crossed the road and passed the car just as he got out. He said 'sorry I was waiting to see if you were going to cross'

I said 'ok but you shouldn't be driving over the curb and across the pavement, especially in the dark it's really dangerous!' (this is a busy village with lots of young families)

He said 'its an amazing invention called lights, love, you should try them out' and starts walking away from me across the road to the village shop.

I shouted (because he was storming away from me) 'that doesn't mean you can park wherever you like' and he responded with an expletive that I couldn't really hear.

For what it's worth there was plenty of on street parking next to the shop but I think I didn't want to inconvenience himself to drive 20m out of his way and have to turn around, so he thought he had the right to park in the middle of the pavement.

I don't think I'm unreasonable but it's pissed me off!

I nearly voted YABU for not photographing plate and finding a traffic warden.

Good for you.

I would have challenged perhaps if I was alone, but I'd never have done that with children present....it's just not worth the risk just to get the final word

Sillysoggyspaniel · 30/10/2025 19:21

I would've if the car was blocking the pavement and the pram couldn't fit, or if he had just bumped up dangerously rather than already waiting and seeing you and then parking. But from what you've described, no.

hereismydog · 30/10/2025 19:24

I don’t think I’d have kept on at him as he was walking away if I had my child with me. He could have had any sort of nasty temper!

All four wheels were on the pavement, rather than half on half off. So he fully just drove over the pedestrian area as if it was a road!

Pp also said this... hadn't even occurred to me so I probably need to be more street smart 😬

Shouting at a random man while alone with the children in the dark all because you don’t like how he parked. Yeah very smart OP, rude to a stranger and could have put your kids in danger for it. All because of a non event, well done.

Enough4me · 30/10/2025 19:29

I'd have been pissed off too. It's done now, he knows he's been a tw*t, try to forget about it.

But also I refuse to live my life worrying about how someone could react. Perhaps I could be a little shot away, do they worry?

Id have then shouted I won’t tell you about the key crime round this way then.

But did it cause any actual issue?

Sounds like he didn't.
