To miss size 10-12 clothes

In M&S today looking at pyjamas. They do a Small which is an 8-10, or a Medium which is a 12-14. To be fair I expect the new 8-10 is probably an old 10-12 but in my head there’s no way I’m a size 8. I remember in the early 2000s when they introduced single sizes. That was fine. Now they are xs, s, m, l, XL, 2xl for pyjamas. I think trousers and tops are still single sizes but I do miss the old 10-12 . I think the sizes either side were 8-10 and 12-14 so those of us that no matter what we weigh are always between sizes could find our happy size.
Of course most sizes are just bollocks anyway and who knows what an 8,10,12 etc really means. My Dd is a 4-6. Those sizes don’t exist when I was her age (16). I used to love looking in my
mum’s catalogue and the smallest adult size was an 8. And they didn’t fit my 7.5stone 5’2” frame. Do men have this trouble?

Get a grip. Seriously.

I agree, but you will have people claiming vanity sizing etc in most shops etc. I find I have to carry 2 and sometimes 3 different sizes of the same thing into changing rooms, which I don't have time to do in most cases .
I'm a shoe size 5.5 , so that's a pain in the arse as well.

DuffyFluster · 24/10/2025 20:06

What a load of waffle! Just buy clothes that fit you and don't buy, or return, ones that don't.

Iwanttoliveinagardencentre · 24/10/2025 20:11

Back in my youth clothes shops I frequented only sold 10, 12, 14. I never remember seeing an 8 and christ knows how small a 4 would have been in old money!

XS, S, M, L, XL etc is very unhelpful as it is subjective. Even worse with clothes from other countries. China or Japan’s sizing would consider the most average UK woman a XL.

Far better to have actual size numbers.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/10/2025 20:11

They should just do women’s clothes by measurements like men’s clothes. Problem solved.

DuesToTheDirt · 24/10/2025 20:13

I hate this broad size range rubbish, especially M&S pyjamas. 8-10 are tight on me and12-14 too floppy. Just give us a choice of 8,10,12,14 FGS.

Moonface318 · 24/10/2025 20:22

YES! Size 8-10 is usually too small for me and 12-14 is too big. SO annoying. Primark does a reliable 10-12 but it's not everyone's cup of tea, obvs.

Absolutely agree.

Men don’t go through the same clothing nonsense that we have to

jetlag92 · 24/10/2025 20:30

An M&S S is a 10. (a large one at that!)

HausofHolbein · 24/10/2025 21:40

YANBU at all!!!!

I'm an 11: 10/12 in bottoms, 10 in tops.

I am neither an 8, nor a 14. Drives me mad.

BernardButlersBra · 24/10/2025 21:48

Agreed. But lm biased as lm a small 12. So 8-10 too small and 12-14 is usually too big

GoodTwoShoes · 24/10/2025 22:01

I agree. Next have changed their sizing too, I can now either order a slightly too small S or a slightly too large M. Always used to be a 10. I don't know where to order my clothes from any more as they had such a good basic Tall range.
I get it, they save money because they don't have to make as many sizes but still.

henlake7 · 24/10/2025 22:01

It's all very arbitrary, although I'm usually ok as I'm an 8/10.
Although a couple of times now I've wanted a top in Primark in an xxs and I've refused to buy it coz there is no way I'm actually that size and it would annoy me to buy it!
