I know I’m maybe being a bit sensitive but I was at work yesterday and walking down the spiral staircase and a man who works in another department was at the bottom of the steps about to walk up when he saw me. He dramatically stopped and as I walked down he laughed and said that I’d have taken him with me if he tried to walk on them at the same time. The stairs comfortably fit two people walking opposite direction. I just feel a bit sad by what he said.

Sounds like awkward humour really - spur of the moment 'What do I say to acknowledge the situation' stuff.

But if you're not happy with your weight, as ever that's the only thing you can change, not other people.

Danikm151 · 24/10/2025 13:02

Some people think it’s bad luck to cross on the stairs so maybe it’s that?

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2025 13:04

Ignore.

Don't forget it's considered bad luck to cross people on the stairs by many people.

Tbh I don't, but regularly give way purely as a matter of courtesy rather than feel like I'm crowding someone on the stairs even if there's plenty of space, as it makes me feel almost off balance / at risk of falling or I worry they will feel like that. This applies to everyone including if it's a thin person on the stairs.

Don't give it a second thought.

boymamahere · 24/10/2025 13:04

Was you walking down the stairs fast? Perhaps he meant you were quick

Deadringer · 24/10/2025 13:09

If you were walking quickly I would assume that's what he meant. If not i would think he was rude.

Geneelondon · 24/10/2025 13:09

No I wasn’t walking quick. Just a normal pace

Oh man, I can see how that was a shitty comment. I’m sorry.

I stepped aside once to let someone come up before me on the steps into a swimming pool because there would not have been room for her coming up and me coming down. I wasn’t fat shaming her - the steps were narrow and about the right width for me to go down with my young child next to me.

She got very pissed off and said ‘you can’t catch fat, you know!’ It was so bizarre. It was about the space available, not her body. 🤷‍♀️

People can absolutely be nasty about peopoe’s bodies - but not all of us all of the time (I offer this in a spirit of reassurance, not gaslighting)
