A question about noisy car exhaust

CoffeeCakeCreamy · 23/10/2025 17:07

I've developed a noisy exhaust, brought to the mechanic, who says it's a cracked exhaust caused by a rusted weld. He can't do the job for a few days but said it's perfectly safe to drive in the meantime, just noisy. I'd planned a two hour journey each way this weekend and am slightly nervous about it, considering whether or not to go.

Has anyone any knowledge about this?

I'll tell you who probably has the most knowledge on it.... The mechanic

Nervous of what? It's just a cracked exhaust, absolutely nothing bad will happen. Turn the music up if the noise bothers you Grin

Pretend you are Lewis Hamilton

I would go with what a mechanic says. The only issue is if you get caught with a noisy car either by police or a noise camera, it’s a £50 fine. Don’t know how likely that is though.

Really? There several obnoxious are families who love the so called "farty cars" in our town and display them proudly on driveways usually under a Reform flag but they've never been fined from what I could tell, sadly.

It would have to be ridiculously loud…

if the mechanic said it’s fine, it’s probably fine. You couldn’t tell go to another mechanic and ask them but unless the bracket is weak and wobbly it will stay where it is and just be loud.

I don’t think many people know they can be fined and some towns are introducing noise cameras so it will happen more. I think it’s a good thing as it will discourage modified exhausts.

From a bona fide petrol head, it will be absolutely fine. The drone might do your head in, and your car might burn a bit more fuel, but if your mechanic has said it’s safe to drive then the structure itself will be secure.

And as for the ‘noisy exhaust and reform’ comment above - what a crock of shit. Lots of love from a non reform supporter who hopes you were woken up by a V10 under your window 😂

Thank you, this is good to know. I mean, it's not super loud, like modified car loud, but I'm obviously aware as it's louder than normal.

Firstly I would never intend to vote reform. It’s a wasted vote for a start!

But it just can’t be logical that 1 individual’s car can ruin the peace for a whole residential area can it? I’m guessing that’s why it is illegal.

I see these young lads with them and they must think it makes them attractive to the opposite sex, but the opposite is actually true. There are also going to be many more noise cameras about and it’s quite worrying how they will be used because it’s an automatic fine sent to your door apparently regardless of whether your car is modified or not. There are calls for the fine to increase to £1000 but I’m not sure if that will happen.

Sounds like the OPs car is not that load though so should be fine.

Based on some of the racket from some of the cars driving round here I'd say incredibly unlikely!

Yes I think the police are little stretched to start dishing out small fines if they see a car. I think they only act if someone actually reports it.

A not so good update... I was due to travel today and was still in two minds but it hasn't happened as yesterday, on a two minute drive to supermarket - first time to use car since diagnosis - a woman behind me got out of her car, waved frantically at me and told me my exhaust was swinging wildly, almost hitting the ground.

Oh dear! Sounds like a cable tie would help tho? Get the mechanic to fit it.
