Would you have confronted these?

I was walking past three men sat on a bench. One said something in their language whilst looking at me and they all then looked at me and laughed, one looked back at me and I shot him a look. I'm quite overweight so perhaps it was something about that but I have no clue. I'm usually not afraid of confrontation but on this occasion, I decided not to as more and more people are carrying weapons. I wish I had now though or they'll never learn to have a bit of respect.

No, I'd have completely ignored them.

Don't rise to it.

FionnulaTheCooler · 22/10/2025 14:30

No, as a lone woman I would feel unsafe getting into a confrontation with three men. I'd have ignored them and kept walking, I don't actually give a fuck what some random strangers think of my appearance anyway.

DiscoBob · 22/10/2025 14:31

I might have mumbled something under my breath about them being twats but if it's in another language I tend to just not register as even if it looks bad you really don't have a clue what they said.

Life's too short to concern yourself with complete strangers.

InteriorPond · 22/10/2025 14:33

Depending on my mood and the surroundings, I’d either have ignored or said ‘Fancy saying that in a language all of us understand, big shot? No? Thought not.’

ComfortFoodCafe · 22/10/2025 14:34

I would of said something like “I understand what you said there, no need to be rude.” And walked off.

Eightdayz · 22/10/2025 15:04

Ah another immigrant bashing thread. We've not had one of these for a while.

Novel approach op. 👏

I'm not bashing immigrants at all. I mentioned them speaking in their language as I didn't understand what was said. That's all so get down from your high horse.

Don't be so bloody ridiculous.

Upstartled · 22/10/2025 15:15

Op, I think I'd have just kept walking, like you did. There's only risk and nothing to be gained from confronting them.

menopausalfart · 22/10/2025 15:19

I once had a load of blokes walking behind me shouting threats of violence. I was walking home from work, minding my own business. Usually, I don't back down, but you have to know when to choose your battles and keep yourself safe.

Goldenbear · 22/10/2025 15:26

I would say no but personally I have done in the past and DH thinks I shouldn't due to potential problems. I had a man call me a Slut, I had a raincoat on and cords not that this would matter but I was dressed in a everyday clothes kind of way. I did say to him, "sorry what?", I say sorry like, "excuse me". He said it again and then proceeded to keep saying it whilst walking towards me. However, it was late afternoon and he looked the most unlikely person to say this kind of thing, is already assessed his ability against mine to run faster than him and DH was waiting for me around the corner. So if you like I had done a quick risk assessment prior to my objection. There have been other times but it's because I don't like injustices, my Dad was the same and used to embarrass me if he stuck up for himself so I try to rein it in and think DH has a point, that I don't really know who I'm dealing with.

Yes, this is what I think and that does sound like an intimidating situation and a high risk one.

What??

Dollymylove · 22/10/2025 15:46

Could it just have been one of them saying something funny and the others laughing at the very moment you walked past?and no I wouldnt confront them unless I had someone else, preferably male and large, with me

BlissfullHaze · 22/10/2025 15:47

If you don't know what they said.. how do you even know there's something to confront?

I usually offer a small smile if I accidentally catch someones eye and move on I wouldn't respond to someone clearly not speaking directly to me especially if I can't understand them.

Assumption makes an... I recommend not assuming comments are negative when I can't understand what's said.

BallerinaRadio · 22/10/2025 15:49

If you didn't understand their language how do you even know they were talking about you? It could have been nothing to do with you you just assumed 🙄

TBF yes, this could definitely be the case, probably best to think along these lines OP.

PflumPfeffer · 22/10/2025 16:10

Gosh golly OP, how could you possibly know the meaning/ read the situation when they spoke in a different language!!!!!!!!!
…When 90% of communication is nonverbal and most NT people know not to rely on words to read tone, threat, etc. 😆

I would like to say I’d stay safe and not confront them. That’s definitely the right thing to do, but I probably would have snapped something under my breath.

Eightdayz · 22/10/2025 16:16

Onefortheroad25 · 22/10/2025 15:41

What??

"One said something in their language"

Seems very goady to me...

Perfectlypea · 22/10/2025 16:17

No I wouldn’t have confronted them, maybe 10 years ago I would have felt braver but as you say, you just never know what might happen these days.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 22/10/2025 16:26

But why would you care what 3 idiots think?

I remember walking past pubs and guys looking at me and laughing. I couldn't care less.

I just felt sorry for them bc they must have such miserable lives to be so bitchy.

I just felt happy that my life is not like theirs.

Bikergran · 22/10/2025 16:28

No. Personal safety comes first, plus you have no idea what they said, so what on earth would you have to confront them about?

Or maybe they were tourists? Who knows? Point is she didn't understand their language and they were clearly being rude to her! How is that immigrant bashing?

Cherrysoup · 22/10/2025 16:56

Bunch of wankers with small penises! I’d err on the side of caution and keep yourself safe. You cannot predict what strangers will do, so best to ignore and move on, but how bloody nasty of them.

But harsh if he was just telling his mate a knock knock joke that he found funny
