Penguin and Club bars can no longer be described as chocolate - BBC News

They are lowering the cocoa content so much that Penguin and Club bars cannot be called "chocolate" anymore but must be referred to as "chocolate flavour". IMO this is ridiculous, they should keep the cocoa content the same and put the price up if necessary.

Oh I thought this was going to be about the penguins at Sea Life that are being kept indoors with no sunlight/fresh air and inappropriate pools for their size and ability. That really is outrageous.

I didn't even know they still made Penguins though and the last time I had them which was many years ago I thought they had already been ruined compared to what they were in my childhood. These days everything seems to be getting shitter and shitter.

Thank God this is only about chocolate.

Penguin chocolate bars have never REALLY tasted very chocolatey; a slightly fake, greasy type of “chocolate” really. So haven’t bought them in recent decades. I did use to like biting the chocolate away from the biscuit bit though when DM used to put in packed lunches as a kid.

This isn't new - there was a long period in the late 80s and 90s when Penguin bars were 'chocolate flavoured' due to content, then at some point they increased the cocoa content so they were 'chocolate' again. The first change to 'chocolate flavoured' coincided with the move from foil wrapping to plastic wrapping and the whole thing cheapened them at that point.

Get two Penguins, take the biscuit off one side of each, and sandwich the remaining biscuits together to get an extra thick penguin with a double layer of cream.

If they put the price up then people wont be able to buy them as a staple for lunchboxes etc so profits will go down. This way it is a win win, so long as they still taste ok. Havent had them in years so no idea whether they are still passable. I was never bothered by them tbh

Consumers will vote with thier wallets, if they prefer to pay more for a higher chocolate content and sales drop they can change back. Sounds like a fully reversible decision

if things don’t change the price will be outrageous & you won’t purchase it, so things have to change & you don’t like it, what do the manufacturers do? Absolute conundrum.

My uncle worked in the penguin factory when we were kids. We always had loads of misshapen penguins whenever we went to visit. I’m nostalgically fond of them.

They'll have to rewrite the jingle;

If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, don't buy Clubs.

Hopefully another manufacturer will keep the chocolate on their biscuits and advertise the fact to really stick it to McVities.
