Hysterectomy & Sex

Not really an AIBU, just posting here for traffic. Name changed due to the personal nature of my query.

I have a medical condition that may result in needing a hysterectomy at some point in the future. The thought crossed my mind yesterday that if I were to have a hysterectomy that would surely mean sex would be destroyed for good?

The questions I have for women who have been there and done it:

Can you orgasm without a uterus? As uterine contractions are a big part of orgasm for me.

Does it affect your libido?

Are there any other things to know aside from crashing into menopause overnight and all the associated hell that brings?

I had a hysterectomy about 12 years ago, I haven’t noticed any difference

KarmenPQZ · 20/10/2025 16:12

I think you should be given oestrogen and other hormones to prevent ‘crashing into menopause’ but you should discuss with your doctor for sure.

Boomer55 · 20/10/2025 16:13

Not for me. I had an early (health caused) hysterectomy when I was 30, and nothing changed. Libido, orgasms etc remained the same.

But, because I was so young, I was put on HRT at that point. Still on it. 👍

They’re only removing the nursery, not the playground. 😉🙄

LorrieTosh · 20/10/2025 16:13

Absolutely no difference for me.

ohyesohyesoh · 20/10/2025 16:14

Genuine question- why would you think sex would be destroyed ? Do you never orgasm when your clit is stimulated ? i don’t think my husbands willy reaches the womb so I think I would be ok

MiddleAgedDread · 20/10/2025 16:15

You don’t necessarily crash into menopause if you keep your ovaries

WinterNightStars · 20/10/2025 16:17

I had a vaginal hysterectomy at 33, now mid 50’s. Been on HRT for years. No change to libido, orgasms. Sex is still great 😜

limetrees32 · 20/10/2025 16:18

@Yesmynamehaschanged yes , since I had a hysterectomy my orgasms are a pale shadow of what they were.
Like you, the contractions of the womb were a big part of an orgasm .
Of course it's not destroyed all pleasure , but it had definitely lessened it.

Part of a clitoral orgasm for me is that it also causes womb contractions. My thought was if there is no womb then the intensity of the orgasm would be affected. But I agree clitoral orgasm would still be achievable.

Really, I wondered whether penetrative sex would no longer result in an internal orgasm.

My sex life has improved. Last year we dtd maybe 8 times (due to the reasons I was needing a hysterectomy).
A year on things are so much better, I've not noticed any downside.

I had a total hysterectomy so am on HRT

Reassuring to hear.

You will feel like a new woman !

I had a total hysterectomy (everything removed) 20 years ago. Couldn’t take HRT for medical reasons. I can be a bit dry sometimes but nothing that some lube can’t sort. Orgasms haven’t changed and neither myself or my husband have noticed any change in feeling when having sex.

limetrees32 · 20/10/2025 20:55

I think the OP. and me are in the minority with our womb muscle contractions.
I didn't realise it wasn't the norm.
