Smart watch for ds (13)

Ds is 13 in year 8 and into sports meaning he's out of the house after school most afternoons and spends weekends on the pitch. He asked for a basic apple se watch for Christmas and many of his friends wear smart watches at school it is allowed as long as it's on airplane mode or similar while at school. This would be a joined present from grandparents and us, his parents and I'm considering this.

Now to my question would you recommend a smart watch / apple watch at this age? I am aware of digital noise, distractions, notifications etc and they are going through such a lot at this age, busy school life, school work, hobbies. He has a smart phone and uses it responsibly he has no social media or anything.

If your teen has a smart watch do you regret to or are they getting on well with it, what do they use it most for?

Am I being unreasonable to get him a smart watch at 13?

My DS got an apple watch when he was 13, he had it in airplane mode at school (as far as I was aware). He mostly uses it for exercise

Any issues with notifications and distraction from yet another digital device @blankcanvas3 ? I also worry that it's too much too young even though we can afford it especially as a joined present. Does he have the cellular one? My ds is slightly easily distractible and has forgotten his phone or jacket in numerous places. I guess that's why I'm cautious as I don't want to add further distractions on the one hand but would like him to have a watch he enjoys and can use for exercise etc.
