to ask about a disposable lighter?

Hi, before it’s asked, I have actually tried to search both my airline (Virgin Atlantic), as well as “Google” search.

So, I’m in South Africa for a few days, and I have purchased a disposable type lighter with an African design on it that I’d like to give to a friend.

So can I either pack it on my main 20 kilo case that gets checked in,
or
do I pack it in my 10 kilo cabin case
or
put it in my backpack
or
must I leave it behind?

I’m puzzled, as there must be smokers that wish to smoke once they’ve landed at a U.K. airport, so what do they do ?

I’m thankful to all posters that can give me useful information, that won’t get me into troubles when I travel home.
🙏🏻

As far as I can remember from my smoking days, you can pack it in your hand luggage or your hold luggage. I always used to just put in my handbag, no trouble

My friend smokes and she just keeps her fags and lighter in her handbag or pocket.

Hayley1256 · 19/10/2025 22:02

Hand luggage or handbag, you take it out and put it separately on the security tray

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 19/10/2025 22:03

Handbag, hand luggage or pocket

Thank you everyone for posting your experiences and thoughts.
Iv attached a pic of the disposable lighter that I wish to gift my friend, and I wonder if that will help obtain a better decision?

I have no idea if it’s a “blue flame” such as malmi poster said, when I click it, it’s a normal yellow flame, so does that info help?

Thank you everyone for posting 🥰

I never had any problem with lighters in my hand luggage. If the flame is a standard yellow flame, well that's not a blue flame, so all good.

DiscoBob · 20/10/2025 12:54

I'm a smoker so always carried a lighter in my carry on or handbag. I always get pulled and searched but the lighters have never been an issue!

IDontLikePinaColadas · 20/10/2025 12:55

I always just put them in my clear liquids bag. Never had a problem

HisNibs · 20/10/2025 13:08

According to the VA website, you can carry 1 lighter but it should be on your person i.e. in your pocket. It shouldn't be in your hand luggage though I never had any trouble with that when I used to smoke.

I have had lighters in my travel bag and hold. Never had an issue.
Usually have my using one on me and souvenir ones in the case.
