I am house hunting at the moment but why oh why are bedrooms always 2 double and one single or box room.
AIBU to want my children to both have the same size bedroom?

Yep. Looks like your in the box room :)

I had the box room as a child, I didn’t feel hard done by. I actually loved it.

I don’t know why it’s always been a thing. We have 4 bedrooms, but the 2 at the back were a large double and a tiddly single, really only suitable for a cot.
But my clever dh moved the stud wall, to make one still fair sized double, and a good sized single.

Our house in Germany had a big Master, then 2 equal sized "kinderzimmer". It was such a sensible design. (Except the rooms having full length opening windows with horizontal bars!)

It's really annoying, our current house has two massive rooms and a tiny box room, with a good 3x3m wasted on the upper landing as stairs are in the middle so rooms are in a u shape.
Our new house is a sideways house in layout, 2 biggish rooms at 4x4m and two rooms at 2.6x3.9m. Kitchen and bathroom are bloody tiny though. Can't win!

You always need to buy one more room than you need to get equal ish sized rooms.

Lots of my friends have converted the loft for a bedroom and bathroom for themselves and then their two DC have equal size rooms.

I had the box room until I left home at the age of 20 - didnt think anything different tbh. My brothers shared the other double room.

I'm beginning to realise how true this is. Our new house has not one single cupboard, so where do shoes, costs, suitcases, towels and bedding live? For a family of 6, that's a lot of stuff.

Maray1967 · 18/10/2025 22:20

My DB and SIL dealt with this by moving the box room/master wall further into the master and they have the double at the back. It was not a very expensive job as they intended to redecorate and recarpet anyway. The two front rooms are not exactly equal but a lot better than before.

caffelattetogo · 18/10/2025 23:02

It’s so frustrating isn’t it? We are looking to downside but all the three beds have a tiny 6’ box room and a reasonable room.

MidnightMeltdown · 19/10/2025 03:08

Most houses were built during a time when a 2 up 2 down would house a family of 6.

I assume that box rooms were designed as nurseries, and children would share. Children having their own bedrooms is a very recent thing for average working class families, and most of our housing stock is old.

Yep, you need to convert the loft or garage for yourself and then the kids have doubles and the single becomes a study.

Don’t know. But not long after we bought our 60s 4 bed (2 good sized doubles, 1 OK sized single, one very small one) we (or rather dh) made the OK sized single bigger, by turning the adjacent one of the 2 deep cupboards on the landing into that bedroom’s wardrobe, and moving the wall between one of the good sized doubles and the tiddly room, to make 2 more even-sized rooms.

We then wondered why on earth the builders hadn’t done this in the first place. So much more practical.
