My grown son has started vaping

So my son, who is 25 started to vape around 3-4 weeks ago and I haven’t been happy about it. Yesterday he noticed blood when he started coughing, he has promised he won’t vape anymore

AIBU in getting angry about him vaping, he has promised he will stop, will the blood he coughed up heal? He won’t go to the doctors at all, so what can I do?

Coughing up blood is very worrying. If he's been vaping for 4 weeks it's likely unrelated.

He needs to see a dr.

He has been vaping a lot though, but I can’t convince him to go to the doctors

Has he looked at the NHS page for bleeding?

PermanentTemporary · 17/10/2025 20:05

Ok having read the ‘coughing up blood’ page myself…

Ask him what would make him go to the doctor. Does calling 111 seem more approachable?

Can I ring on his behalf? Do you think it’s due to the vaping?

Good grief he's a grown man. I'd be furious if my mother pried into my nicotine habits like this.

Absolutely. Vaping isn’t going to cause bleeding after a few weeks anyway. I’m assuming he has a job and earns his own money? None of your business

He’s 25!

Pincey77 · 17/10/2025 20:18

Objectively he should see a doctor but ultimately he's a grown adult and you need to back off. You sound incredibly overbearing.

Okiedokie123 · 17/10/2025 20:22

My ds started smoking aged 19 and still does. I hate that he does so but ultimately it’s his choice. Same with your ds. You can offer you opinion but no more than that. He’s an adult.
and no you can’t phone a doctor on his behalf. He should though.

Of course you can’t ring on his behalf!

What you can do is read the NHS page out loud to him every time you see him. Remind him that if he leaves it much longer, he might not have an option to have it healed. Ask him to do an e consult for your sake. Threaten to stop talking to him until he speaks to a Dr. Tell his friends so they nag him too. All the mum guilt things. And if those don’t work then you need to go dark and tell him he’s breaking your heart and you can’t bear to look at him, but he needs to tell people what music he wants for his funeral.

I've been vaping constantly for 14 years. Never coughed up blood. He needs to see a Dr, I also highly doubt this is vaping related unless he's using unapproved vape juice.

Jellybunny56 · 17/10/2025 20:39

He’s a grown man and adult- it’s none of your business and you absolutely cannot do anything on his behalf.

4 weeks of vaping is extremely unlikely to have caused coughing up blood, most likely that is unrelated.

WoahWoahandThriceWoah · 17/10/2025 21:05

Hmmmmm yeah course he's coughing up blood from 4 weeks of vaping........
Either he is vaping something other than just nicotine or perhaps has this awful virus that is going around.
Either way he is 25 not 15 so you need to back off!

BauhausOfEliott · 18/10/2025 02:22

Vaping for a few weeks doesn’t make someone cough up blood.

He is 25, so it’s irrelevant what you think of him vaping. It’s not your business.

How much blood is he coughing up? Are we talking a few specks in his phlegm, or tablespoons of fresh blood? A few specks is unlikely to be a big deal; it can happen to anyone who is coughing hard. But if he’s coughing up mouthfuls of blood that’s obviously a lot more serious.

You can’t consult a doctor on his behalf. He’s 25 and needs to make his own decision.
