To ask if it’s worth taping the charts ?

I’m currently listening to the Top 40 countdown on Radio 1 - something I really don’t do often.

However, would you say it’s worth me taping the charts so I can play the songs back in the week?

Has this been stored in your drafts since 1992? Of course it's not worth it. Get Spotify you loon.

Catpiece · 17/10/2025 16:09

1974 called. It’s time for you to go back

BallerinaRadio · 17/10/2025 16:10

It's music. If you wanna listen to it just listen to it why do you need our permission?

Geneticsbunny · 17/10/2025 16:10

Yes but you have to stop ans start the recording so you crop all the talking bits out

ChesterDrawz · 17/10/2025 16:12

It depends whether a younger brother or sister is likely to burst noisily into your bedroom while you're making every effort to be silent as it records.

PinkArt · 17/10/2025 16:12

Definitely. Take That are talking to Mark Goodier about their new single. Swooooooooon.

Oh those were the days!! I still expect to hear the DJ on certain tracks now!
Taping the charts was the best, I've still got one of my 'mixtapes' a C90 cassette. Nothing to play it on now though.
But OP, you surely aren't serious?

I’m listening to the charts on Radio 1 - but sadly I’ve got no cassettes to hand 😭

we’re on Benson Boone ‘Beautiful Things’ . Surely thins has been in the charts since 1st January 1956?

Old stuff ends up in the charts a lot more often these days.

In the olden days you actually need to print the CDs, cassettes, vinyl, etc, so there were only a certain number of singles "out" at a time. You couldn't generally buy a single of something old back then, because the shops wouldn't have it in stock. You'd have to buy the album

These days, because it's all digital, everything is always available to buy / stream. If a song gets played on a big TV show it'll often see a boost in streams, and end up in the charts. Or if someone popular covers a song, then the original might get a boost as well etc.

"Running up That Hill" by Kate Bush is the most obvious one that comes to mind. Ended up back in the Top 10 decades after release because it was on Stranger Things.

Tonnes of her songs were released years ago but she’s only just gained traction so I think that’s why they’re charting now

CreteBound · 17/10/2025 16:52

How would you tape it???

Ah yes that’s a very good point about being always being able to buy!

I'm impressed you've still got a tape recorder that works and a blank cassette Shock

Streaming means that songs shoot up the charts randomly at times when lots of people download/play them. That can be for all sorts of reasons, eg the song appearing on a TV show or being lip-synced on TikTok or any number of other things.

I have tapes and a player but no recorder

AmethystAnnotation · 17/10/2025 18:20

Not unless you can time-travel back at least 30 years😆

I still have the wherewithal to tape the charts but there's nothing worth taping,

soupyspoon · 17/10/2025 18:24

Love this thread

Are you going to wind up the cassette with a pencil if the tape spool gets all loose?

Are you going to make sure you catch the very start of the song and end of the song without Simon Mayo talking over it, get ready with those trigger fingers.

Make sure you label it in very small, unreadable biro that smudges off.

BouseHeutiful · 17/10/2025 18:25

I miss top of the pops

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/10/2025 18:34

Only tape it if Duran Duran are on it. Then I'll come round to yours and we'll talk about Simon Le Bon and John Taylor, do our hair and make up and go down the precinct to hang out and see if we can see that guy from 6th form who works part time in Wimpy.

The charts work differently these days love. You don’t buy singles from Woolworths anymore. Kindly, have you been in a coma? 😅

Elsvieta · 17/10/2025 19:47

Saw the title and had a nice nostalgic eighties flashback. Then thought obviously it couldn't be that and tried to guess what it was. Had concluded it must be something like taping the kids' star chart to the wall....
