Is it normal to be woken with this???

Posting in the hope someone can help!

recently I’ve had some weird symptoms- the main one being I keep waking up during the night with stomach pain and diarrhoea. It’s a mixture of nausea, cramps and at times severe pain in my lower abdomen and then awful diarrhoea. The pain is so severe it wakes me up from sleeping and sometimes I’ll even be aware of the pain in my dreams directly before I wake up. It’s really awful. It started a few months ago, happens a few times a week and it doesn’t matter when I last ate- eg yesterday I hadn’t eaten since 5pm and I still woke up with the pain at 3am anyway.

I’ve previously had ibs and had diarrhoea and cramps from that but that was years ago and I’ve not had issues in years and this feels very different- when I had IBS it wasn’t as painful as this, it was more of a sickness cramp rather than painful and certainly not enough to regularly wake me from sleeping like it is now. I only ever got diarrhoea during the day and it was limited to when I ate certain foods and I’d be unwell directly afterwards, whereas this is during the night when I’m sleeping and isn’t triggered by foods.

does anyone know, is this likely just IBS again? Is it normal to be woken by it?

I just have this gut instinct something isn’t right in my body but I don’t know what. I’m mid 20s so I know it’s unlikely anything else is wrong but this pain is horrendous- today I was up from 3-6am rolling about in agony with it, paracetamol didn’t help, I had diarrhoea 8 times then eventually it passed. The pain was so awful it woke up me up. Problem is I can’t get seen at gastro because they rejected the referral on the basis of ‘it’s just IBS’ which was checked 4 years ago but it just feels different and I didn’t think IBS could be bad enough to wake you up

I have similar symptoms and I'm being investigated for endometriosis. Have you noticed any connection to your monthly cycle?

Get checked for Crohns disease.

It sounds like gallstones. I’d get checked by your GP who can refer you for a scan and for gallbladder removal. Don’t be fobbed off that it isn’t necessary. Once you have gallstones they will keep coming back until your gallbladder is removed.

Get yourself a gp appt and make it very clear this is a complete change in symptoms and totally unusual for you. Change in bowel habits should be investigated

Wow this sounds so similar to what I had, it went on for months but I haven’t had it for a while now. Do you get eggy burps with it? Mine seemed to be worse when I hadn’t eaten on an evening, I would get really bloated, eggy burps then in the night pretty much exactly what you described. Happening every few days.

You’re the right sort of age for developing Crohns/Colitis so I would push for more investigation into that.
