To ask for your advice re applying for temporary promotion?

I work in the public sector, and have been in my role for about 3 years (just below middle management level).

An opportunity has just come up to apply for temporary promotion to a middle management role in a team I’ve been helping out for a few weeks. I’d be grateful for your advice on whether to go for the promotion, and will be completely honest about my thoughts about it so far.

In terms of reasons to apply for the promotion, there is the higher pay and the chance to get experience at the next grade up. The new team also seem quite nice, from the dealings I’ve had with them so far - although I haven’t had an huge amount of interaction with them, as I’ve been balancing the work for them with work in my own team

In terms of what is putting me off, I don’t think I’ll enjoy the actual work itself - it’s secretariat work (minute-taking and putting together board papers, which whilst I normally quite enjoy, I’ve been finding a bit boring in the time I’ve been helping out this team).

Having said that, I have nothing to lose by just applying for the temporary promotion.

Would be very grateful for any advice on what I should do. Thanks!

Go for it - nothing to lose really. Good luck ☺️

When you say 'temporary' how long is it for and are you guaranteed to be able to go back to your current role?

I would consider how easy it is to go back to your role. If it is like a secondment I would go for it - if anything it is good to signal to your managers how serious you are about progression.

It's good experience at the interview process and you don't have to take it if offered

Thanks all. The temporary promotion would work like a secondment, and a return to my current role is guaranteed when the temporary promotion finishes.

In that case, you've got nothing to lose. More money, looks good on your CV, different experience and if you hate it, it doesn't matter as you won't be there long anyway. You'd be crazy to turn it down.

You don't really have anything to lose then.
