Why have I wet the bed?

Last night I woke up up having done a full on wee in the bed. I am so upset and embarrassed. I don’t think my husband is aware and will tell him I’ve got my period and had to wash the sheets.

why has this happened? I haven’t got an infection. I didn’t drink alcohol or caffeine after about 9.30pm.
I am 45, the only things that might be relevant are that I am really stressed and anxious at the moment, not getting enough sleep or rest, and taking low dose amytriptyline which makes me sleep quite heavily. I do also have a bit of stress incontinence but nothing like this.

im so upset this might happen again tonight. Please help, has this happened to anyone else?

I didn’t want to read and run, but as you don’t seem to have been comatose from drugs or alcohol I might be inclined to ring the gp and to buy some incontinence pants to wear tonight. Sending massive sympathy, I would feel exactly as you do about this.

I was dreaming about sitting on the toilet when I wet the bed. Luckily woke up as I started so didnt flood it.
You were maybe just too deeply asleep to be aware of your full bladder

SugarPlumpFairyCakes · 15/10/2025 08:32

You might be really really tired?

Last year I did the same. I was shattered. I fully dreamed I was on the loo - felt the seat under me - and couldn’t go. I was getting annoyed in my dream. Clearly my body was trying to urge me out of deep sleep and get me to go the loo in real life. It didn’t work!

Now I go to sleep with the mantra, “I must wake up to go to the loo.” over and over. It seems to have worked. Oh and a visit to the bathroom before sleep.

If it happens a few more times then I’d seek help. A one off, these things happen.

Diabetes can mean you need to wee more often

HelloGreen · 15/10/2025 08:34

Stress and anxiety does horrible things to the body, I wouldn’t write off that it could be that.

Didimum · 15/10/2025 08:38

If you’re taking a med to make you sleep more deeply, it may just mean that your pelvic floor has reached a point that it can’t handle it anymore. Being in a very deep sleep will absolutely contribute to that. Don’t feel bad about yourself – it’s an involuntary bodily function that you couldn’t do anything about.

I have nearly done it, like someone above dreaming of needing a toilet, desperately searching for one (in a shopping centre I think) getting there just in time and then fortunately waking up just in time! I think that was a deep sleep that my body had trouble waking me out of. I have had similar since, but not such a near call, make sure you empty your bladder before bed and if you feel an urge in the night make sure you don't ignore it! Obviously talk to your GP if it happens again.

Swimswans · 15/10/2025 15:41

I almost did the same thing last night. Dreaming that I was going to, fully ready to upon waking up. First time ever in my life. I ofcourse was lucky because I didn't, but I was quite upset from it, wondering what would have happened if my alarm hadn't woken me.
I'm 47.
Was it the moon?
Anyone else?

FcukBreastCancer · 15/10/2025 16:31

Happened to me, GP wanted to examine me and straight away said i had thrush

BedlingtonFloof · 15/10/2025 16:33

Like PP, I was once dreaming I was peeing and I started to wee. Luckily I’m a light sleeper and I woke up pretty sharpish, but it could be that, and you were too deeply asleep to be woken up by it?

embarrassingproblem12345 · 15/10/2025 16:36

Thanks for all the replies, appreciated. It was truly horrible and has really upset me, a nasty shock that this can / did happen. Unfortunately it was quite a big accident as well. I have hidden it from my partner and planning to mention a heavy period as the reason I washed all the sheets in a hurry :(

does anyone think this happening out of the blue is likely to indicate something like diabetes? I am seeing the GP on Monday about something else so will mention it then.

unfortuabtrly I think I am peri menopausal and have been using oestrogen cream on and off , perhaps I need to increase it as I feel a little sore down there and like I need to go more.

Do you have any other symptoms of T1 diabetes - thirst, hunger, weight loss, stomach pain?

WearyCat · 15/10/2025 19:19

I feel a little sore down there and like I need to go more.

Could this be indicative of thrush or UTI?

embarrassingproblem12345 · 15/10/2025 19:21

No other diabetes symptoms but I am overweight.

i do feel a bit u comfortable like with a UTI but it’s not for any worse as the day has gone on - I wonder if it might be more dryness

I can't help with 'why' it happened but on the off chance it may happen again (it very well may not do!) buy a waterproof mattress protector and some puppy pads. Put the mattress protector on first then put the puppy pads on over the top (they are easier to remove in the middle of the night and if they don't soak through you can leave the mattress protector on. Puppy pads tend to be cheaper than adult incontinence pads!).
If you really don't want to mention it to your partner and he asks about the mattress protector tell him you have been sweating in the night so it's fresher to keep it washed 💐

thinkfast · 15/10/2025 20:58

I believe it can be a symptom of diabetes OP
