Scott Mills and name calling

I follow Radio 2s Facebook page for the videos etc. I find that people are really horrible. Whenever there's a post about the breakfast show and Scott Mills you get people jumping on to say it's not like when Terry Wogan was on (really? I never listened to him) but the worst thing is that they often refer to his sexuality and call him Mrs Mills.

Or they say get rid of him and put Sara Cox on who's 20 times better allegedly. No discussion about the actual guests who've been interviewed.

I responded to someone and was told off for having a stick up my arse. Reporting it gets nothing done so I'll follow it on Instagram where comments are monitored.

Why do people think this is ok?

Tbf Sara Cox is x20 better but homophobic abuse is absolutely not on.

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2025 23:09

I think this is why people stop using Facebook, it’s increasingly becoming a cesspit. I’d stay away tbh. I agree this is a very homophobic country in some ways/areas, FB being one of them.

No social media is great but facebook is an absolute cesspit. I only remain on there because I manage various business pages but it’s utterly vile. The comments we get for just quietly trying to sell holidays are WILD. We don’t see any of the same vitriol on any other social media platforms (but we do see marketing results from it, which is why we stay).

No I've not but someone must agree with me then.

I agree too. I prefer Scott Mills to Sarah Cox. I've also never listened to Terry Wogan.

It's just unnecessary. I don't understand why if you don't like someone you'd go out of your way to moan about them and contribute to the stories about them. It doesn't make sense to me.

It's actually hate speech. I've seen the same about Richie Anderson. Homophobia in this day and age is ridiculous. Neither RA or SM even talk about being gay so it's even more puzzling.

Since I saw him on Race Across the World I’m a full on fan girl of Scott Mills. Not relevant to your point op but thought I’d let you know.

Anyway, yes Facebook is vile as soon as you’re dealing with anyone outside your friends list. Homophobic, racist, misogynistic, you name a type of vile and it’s on there.

ScholesPanda · 11/10/2025 10:36

The good thing about homophobes is that all their jokes are so funny and original- I mean 'Mrs Mills' I'm 💀.

I only really use Facebook now for Marketplace. I never see posts from any of my actual friends, just endless content from people I don't know. I did used to use a few local history type groups, and the comments all seem to be from a particular kind of older person who sees everything through rose tinted glasses- a photo of our city after part of it had been literally obliterated by bombs was posted and the comments were still 'much better than what the wokies at the council have done now'; 'at least we didn't have all the students and the funny hair colours'; 'why did the council let BHS close?'

I do think there's a lot of money to be made from an adult theme park called nostalgia land- anyone fancy being an angel investor?

RylanClarksTeeth · 11/10/2025 13:13

@ScholesPanda I didn't know what Mrs Mills was, I'd never heard of her!

Same here with the history groups. I posted a picture of a main shopping street from the 1980s and asked what the shops were back then. I got some good replies but others moaning about shops now being boarded up (they're not they're being renovated), JustEat delivery guys cluttering up the place, and how everything was better when they were younger, with some insults at the council thrown in for good measure. The admins are good at getting rid of them though once reported as it breaks the group rules.

The BBC don't have the report option on their page unfortunately.

Another group is about the summer of 1976. I use that a lot for social commentary because you know, I wasn't here then! One particular man is forever making sexist comments about women, calling them birds and skirt etc.

It's quite depressing.

Considering Terry Wogan finished at radio 2 sixteen years ago and died nine years ago, I think people need to move on…

harriethoyle · 11/10/2025 13:18

I think Mrs Mills is a famous made up etiquette expert, I’d assumed that was the reference 🤷🏻‍♀️

Doberwoman · 11/10/2025 13:25

I love Scott’s breakfast show and even if I didn’t I wouldn’t resort to posting insults on SM. Dermot O’Leary gets some horrible comments on Instagram for his dancing reels every Saturday. I’ve defended him a few times, if people don’t like it then they shouldn’t watch in my opinion.

FunMustard · 11/10/2025 13:43

I'm on Facebook for a couple of groups I'm in as well as family members who I keep in contact with on there.

It is an absolute cesspit of the most stupid, the most offensive, and the most ridiculous people. I have to stop myself from commenting because it raises my blood pressure, and what's the point?
