For laughing at Ed Gein. **SPOILER ALERT***

Watching the Ed Gein drama on Netflix and I've found myself bursting into laughter on two occasions.

The first time he was him prancing around the kitchen in his mother's dress with his back to the viewer. The door knocks. He spins around and has a skin mask on. The shock of it made me laugh out loud.

The second time was similar in that it was a bit of a jump scare. He is babysitting and doing magic tricks. He rips open his shirt and has a mask on again. It came so unexpectedly I laughed again.

I've found it dark and depressing but also slightly comedic at times. I mean the voice is hilarious and the way he says 'mother.' Maybe I'm a psycho.

Did anyone else jump or laugh at these scenes?

Well, he inspired " Psycho".

Yes, they touch on this in the series. The characters of Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs and Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are based on him too.

I found it boring to be honest I watched 2 episodes and a bit of the third. I liked how he does the voice. I can imagine Ed Gein speaking like that 😁

MyAcornWood · 09/10/2025 20:14

That first example is so Mrs Doubtfire with cake on ‘her’ face, it is impossible not to laugh surely?! I haven’t actually watched it, not really my thing, but I’ve seen that clip on social media.

I watched the first 15 mins and switched off. I don't know what I was expecting but it didn't grip me at all.

It's definitely slow moving. I didn't find myself thinking 'can't wait for the next episode' like I would with other series.

Im currently on episode 5 and ive laughed a fair bit. I dont know what it is, maybe its just because its Charlie Hunam, who is gorgeous, prancing about in ladies undies.
Its not gripping me as much as I thought but il watch ot to the end

ProfoundlyPeculiarAndWeird · 09/10/2025 21:30

It is clearly meant to be funny at times.

XenoBitch · 09/10/2025 21:33

I have watched this and kind of felt sorry for him by the end. He was clearly a very unwell man.
According to some shite on FB, that means I am some sort of psycho.
I thought he looked a bit like Chris Packham 😂

Bloozie · 09/10/2025 21:36

I think I'm on about episode 4 and I'm bored. They're dragging the storytelling out, it's really indulgent, they're making loads of stuff up and Ed Gein really doesn't need sexing up, his crimes were horrific, and the voice is really grating. There is no way Adeline or Bernice would ever show any interest in him, speaking like that - and Ed Gein didn't speak like that.

Too much creative license taken, and each episode is at least 20 minutes too long. Self-indulgent.

TartanMammy · 09/10/2025 21:36

Absolutely nothing scares me usually, I laugh at most scary movies, ghost tours, don't blink at horror. I'm just not phased by any of it, so I can see where you're coming from

But I'm on episode 4 of this and it's really fucking disturbing! I've never watched something that's properly gave me the creeps and made me feel so uneasy in the way this has. Maybe because it's more 'real' than your usual ghosts and slashers.

LuckyMoonstone · 09/10/2025 21:48

The bit with the magic trick was like something out of the league of gentlemen 😂😂 ‘OF COURSE ITS REAL!’ absolutely pissed myself laughing

Yes! I saw Chris Packham too. In fact I convinced myself it was him I think .. though that was even more disturbing.

PrivateMusic · 09/10/2025 21:51

I didn’t bother watching the last episode, found it all a bit too silly. I’d rather they stick to the facts.

lol you have no idea how glad I am to see someone else say the same thing 😅

LibbyL92 · 09/10/2025 22:02

I had the hots for Charlie hunnam.. and then I watched this!

heartsinvisiblefury · 10/10/2025 06:52

It’s him sounding like Kermit the frog that got me.

Norma27 · 10/10/2025 07:24

We were talking about it at work the other day. I mentioned the magic show and was crying laughing. It was just so weird.
I am bored of it now though. Don’t think I’ll bother watching the remaining 5 episodes.

FanofLeaves · 10/10/2025 07:34

I did enjoy it but, as with everything Ryan Murphy is involved in, too many ingredients get poured into the mix until you lose the original story. The early episodes were the best before they started taking too much artistic license.

I feel like the interest shown in him by Adeline and later Bernice are simply fantasy for him though. I doubt the character ever got past spying on Adeline through her bedroom door at the start. Later when he’s incarcerated he makes a point of saying he was almost always alone. We now how well he can construct things that feel real to him when we are shown his radios later on that aren’t even plugged in.

The real EG never had sex with the bodies he exhumed. He told police they ‘smelt too bad’.

The voice is hilarious though. I kept hearing Micheal Jackson.

DirtyMartinii · 10/10/2025 08:38

That’s exactly what I said on another thread! DH and I kept bursting into Muppets show tunes. Can you tell we weren’t taking this one seriously 😆
Completely agree with the person upthread who said it was self indulgent nonsense. I so enjoyed the previous two Monsters, and yet this one fell way short of the mark which was really disappointing in all honesty.

I did say to my DH I thought the sordid romance with Bernice Worden was really disrespectful as there is no evidence this happened IRL. Plus she has living relatives! I wouldn't be pleased if that was my nan being portrayed like that.

The artistic license took it way off script.
