She was talking about having friends round for "supper" on Friday. I was puzzled as she knows, and I know, that supper is a piece of toast if you're feeling peckish at bedtime.

Apparently, now she's moved to Surrey she no longer has her dinner between 12 and 1, she has lunch. Now I'm ok with that but AIBU to draw the line at her having supper at tea time?

Everyone knows it’s tea not dinner or supper!!!!

Blablibladirladada · 05/10/2025 18:39

Tbh, dinner is a very tricky word ahah!!!

I once been invited for dinner and made sure to ask if that was the lunch or the snacks one. Been told it was a snack…so ate loadsss before….you see where it is going??

Daphnedot · 05/10/2025 18:40

Wait, what? Is this true? Why don’t your teabags have strings? How do you get them out of your cup?
I use a teapot!

@ForCheeryTealDeer , Breakfast - food to set you up for the day
Dinner - proper square meal.
Supper - light evening meal.

Not pretentious at all.

Well, I think it is!

Blades2 · 05/10/2025 19:00

Everyone knows, that it is Brekki, lunch and tea.

Glasgowgal200 · 05/10/2025 19:10

So!!!!!!!

pollymere · 05/10/2025 19:10

I was brought up with supper being either an informal meal in the evening (which I guess the pizzas would be) or any meal very late at night such as after 9pm.

Bellyblueboy · 05/10/2025 14:46

😂 but dinner could be either. There is no ambiguity with lunch! Which is why lunch is right

Right to some, maybe, but wrong in so many, many ways.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 05/10/2025 19:11

Well tea was rechristened dinner some years back. Was this an effort to make people look more sophisticated You know, as in Dinner Party.

Dinner was and still is a midday meal up North

Supper is just a snack, or a full meal you eat after you have had your tea and before go to bed.

Sorted

Ds from the north lived in London for 2 years.

Started the breakfast, lunch, dinner lingo.

Moved back home. His mates ripped the shit out of him. Now he’s back to breakfast dinner tea.

Lyraloo · 05/10/2025 19:26

Yes you are ATAH, what’s it got to do with you? Jealous?

billysboy · 05/10/2025 19:28

tea is around 4 ish and just a cup of tea and a snack , sandwich or similar to keep you going before supper generally around 7-730
dinner is if we may go out to the pub or restaurant
breakfast is anything before 10 and lunch is at 1

I don't think it's that deep for the OP tbh ... 😂

LouiseK93 · 05/10/2025 19:42

I thought supper was the posh word for dinner 😂
Us Southerners call the 12-1 meal as you say lunch and thd Irish and northerners I know call it dinner.
And we call the evening meal Dinner and the Irish and Northerners call it tea...
I think thats right?! 😂😂😂

ArtfulDenimSheep · 05/10/2025 19:46

Growing up in North Yorkshire, mid day meal was dinner and evening meal 5-5.30 pm was tea. Then supper was just before bed, but not a regular meal and didn't have every night, just a slice of toast is something like that. But mid day meal dinner and evening meal tea. Not until I got in my early twenties did I notice people calling mid day meal dinner and evening meal what I'd always called tea was dinner. 🤔

cupfinalchaos · 05/10/2025 19:52

I think most people are aware lunch is the mid day meal? I call the last meal dinner or supper.

I have an irrational dislike of the word ‘meal’ , ‘supper’ however I’m okay with.

Sharptonguedwoman · 05/10/2025 19:58

Storm on a teacup. ‘Supper’ instantly tells you it’s an evening meal. Dinner means different meals in different places so supper is easier.

Househassles · 05/10/2025 19:58

I'd try breaking into a chorus of "Suppertime!" from Peanuts every time she mentions it.

Sorry, can't post a clicky link for some reason but . Song starts at 1:38.
Snoopy sings, while dancing around his bowl:

Suppertime!!
Yes, it's suppertime.
Ooh, it's sup-sup-suppertime,
Very best time of day.
Suppertime.
Yeah, it's supper time.
And when suppertime comes
Can supper be far away?

Bring on the soup dish,
Bring on the cup,
Bring on the bacon
And fill me up 'cause it's
Supper, supper, supper, supper, suppertime!!

Br-r-ing on the dog food,
Bring on the bone,
Bring on the barrel and
Roll me home 'cause it's
Supper, supper, supper, supper.
Super super-pepper-upper,
Supper, super-duper suppertime!!

Wintertime's nice with the ice and snow,
Summertime's nice with a place to go,
Bedtime, overtime, halftime too,
But they just can't hold a candle to my Suppertime!!
Oh, yeah!

Br-r-ing on the hamburger,
Bring on the bun
Pappy's little puppy loves everyone,
'Cause it's
Supper, supper, supper, supper,
Supper, super pepper-upper,
Supper, super-duper-dupper
Dupa dupa dipa dapa, dipa dapa dupa dapa TIME !!!!!!

legalseagull · 05/10/2025 20:07

Dinner is the main meal of the day, depending when you eat it. Supper is a light meal in the evening. So if I invited friends for supper it would be lasagna/desert if I invited them for dinner it would be a starter/roast/desert
